Carolina 0 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -Amos Lawrence ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns and North Carolina's defense throttled South Carolina as the Tar Heels shutout the Gamecocks 28-0. After a scoreless first period, Lawrence scored on a 29-yard run with 9:31 remaining in the first half. Lawrence's second score capped a 63-yard drive when he swept in from the five-yard line with just 1:06 remaining in the half. The Terps had a third and seven at the Villanova 29 when Tice hooked up on the 25-yarder to Lewis. Maryland scored the first touchdown of the game on its second possession, marching 52 yards on six plays from its own 48. The drive, highlighted by a pair of Tice passes covering 18 and 12 yards, ended with a 10-yard run by Wysocki into the end zone. But those were the last points the Terps would get until the closing seconds of the first half. In between, the Wildcats took advantage of three turnovers to take a 17-7 lead.

Quarterback Pat O'Brien found receiver Willie Sydnor wide open in the left corner of the end zone on a third and 17 play from the 22. The second Maryland turnover came on the Terrapins' next drive. Linebacker Tony Griggs picked off a Tice pass and returned it 31 yards to the Maryland five-yard line. Fullback Spencer Prescott scored three plays later, giving Villanova a 14-7 lead. Chuck Bushbeck booted a 45-yard field goal that just barely cleared the crossbar after the third Terp miscue.

Bruce Kullman was just a half-second too late. One step more, maybe two, and the Villanova University defensive end would have made the tackle of the game the tackle that probably would have given the Wildcats a stunning victory over the University of Maryland yesterday. But in the split-second he had to release the ball, Maryland quarterback Mike Tice lofted a pass over Kullman and 25 yards down field to his receiver, Mike Lewis. The play, which came with a little over a minute left on the clock, put the Terrapins on the Villanova 4-yard line and, two plays later, tailback Charlie Wysocki scrambled in for the winning touchdown in Maryland's 24-20 victory.

"That was the game," Kullman said. "I thought he was going to run the ball, so I hesitated. And then I saw him pull up for a pass. He got it off right when I hit him." "It's all instincts. I do what I feel," Kullman said.

"I could see that he didn't have any receivers open, so I thought he would run it." Tice also didn't think he was going to find anybody to throw to. His intended receiver, tight end Eric Sievers, was well-covered. "I was looking for Eric to come across and hit him for a first down, because we just wanted to eat up the clock and get down field," Tice said. "I didn't see Eric and, all of a sudden, I looked up and saw that Mike Lewis had his man beat by about four steps. He was just running and I just threw it." Tice, who is 6-foot-7, said he never saw Kullman coming after him and that, he thought, was to his advantage.

"If I thought I was going to get hit," Tice said, "I might have rushed the pass or thrown it off balance. But I never saw him coming." Owls convert mistakes into By JEFF JACOBS dannrtl ew Servirp MORGANTOWN, W.Va. The Appalachians shook for 15 long minutes here on a cool September afternoon and when the quake had finally ended, Temple's football team had made a mountain out of a mole hill. Converting West Virginia blunders into 24 points, the Owls blew open a close game in the third quarter and cruised to a 38-16 season-opening victory yesterday before a stunned crowd of 34,299 at Mountaineer Field. Mistakes, fumbling and bumbling helped turn a 7-3 Temple halftime lead into a 38-3 laugher early in the fourth period.

Only a pair of late touchdowns helped maintain some respectability in Coach Frank Cig-netti's ranks. "I don't have any excuses for what happened out there today," Cignetti moaned. "We made more errors today than we did the entire fall camp. We lost both our poise and confidence, which caused error after error." Owl quarterback Brian Broomell finished the afternoon with an 11-of-19 peformance for a career-high 212 yards. In addition to Lucear's TD, Broomell also fired a 40-yard scoring strike to running back Ron Walker.

Broomell completed a 35-yard pass to tight end Drew Wencak during the Owls' first series, but an illegal procedure penalty helped kill the drive, forcing a 40-yard field goal attempt which Delcastle High graduate Ron Fioravanti missed wide. Led by quarterback Oliver Luck who replaced Delaware transfer Dutch Hoffman the Mountaineers marched 76 yards, settling for a 32-yard Steve Sinclair field goal. Temple corner back Robert Keels then ran nine yards with an interception on the Mountaineers' next possession for a 28-3 Owl lead. It became 31-3 following a bad centersnap of a punt on West Virginia's fourth possession of the period, setting up a 39-yard field goal by Fioravanti. Temple's final TD ended the hosts' humiliation as Broomell opened the fourth quarter with a scoring toss to Walker.
