Thomas L. McCarthy Sr. ELKTON, Md. Thomas Lawrence "Pop" McCarthy 78, of 595 Red Hill Road, who was active in the Elkton Community Little League, died Thursday in the Wilmington (Del.) Medical Center General Division after a long illness. Mr.

Mr. Dutton was superintendent of locomotives at the Amtrak Wilmington shops, where he had worked for 42 years. A member of Delmar, Lodge 201, he was also an adviser of the Order of DeMolay. Wilson Community Center in Newark have been halted indefinitely, following a recent incident at a teen dance there. An estimated 100 teens from Wilmington arrived unexpectedly at the dance being held for Newark youths, according to the center director Nathan W. Beasley. Before the evening was over, the visiting teens had done $408 damage to the place, according to Newark officials. The city paid the repair bill, Beasley said.

The American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees Local 459 had sought to compel the county to rehire the workers. The appeal followed an unsuccessful attempt in July to win a Chancery Court injunction to prevent the firings. A representative of the American Arbitration Association, who heard both sides of the argument three months ago, released the decision this week.

The union wanted the county to cancel contracts it has with Colonial Cleaning of Wilmington to provide custodial service for the City-County Building and the Public Safety Building. The union argued that the $50,000 spent annually for the service should be used to rehire the workers. County officials contended it would cost four times as much for county workers clean the buildings because of union minimumwage agreements. Mr. Garey retired from Eastern Steel Barrel Co. in New Jersey years ago, and since then had worked at Besche Bros. Furniture near Georgetown. He is survived by his wife, Bernice Garey; three sons, Larne of Washington, N.J., Arthur of Hampton, N.J., and Duane of Tulsa, two daughters, Charlotte Pay of California and Fay Vergalito in New Jersey; two brothers, Charles W.

Hocker 89, of 225 Second Lewes, died Friday in Beebe Hospital after a short illness. Mr. Hocker retired in 1977 as owner and operator of the Harold W. Hocker a brush manufacturing firm in Lewes he had owned since 1955. He was past master of Jefferson Lodge 15, Lewes.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy W. Hocker; a son, Dr. Harold W. Hocker Jr. of Durham, N.H., and a grandson.

The robbery occurred at 5:40 p.m. at the Chess King Clothiers, when the man, who had been browsing in the store, walked up to the clerk, James E.
