a WILMINGTON MORNING NEWS, WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, TUESDAY, MAY 13, 1947 FIFTEEN PEP WELL SETS TRACK RECORD IN PHILADELPHIA 'CAP Jockey Third Al Snider Tabs Victory A board Calumet Farm's Entry A ir Pa trol Gains Place; Show Captured by Rippey HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., May 13 WV -Calumet Farm's Pep Well broke : the track record for six furlongs In winning the $10,000 added Philadel- , phia Handicap today as "the Graw" began the final lap of Maryland prinfc racing. Before s crowd of ' 7,500. the 4-year-old son of Bos- ; well and Some Pep, streaked across ? the finish line a neck in advance of Shamrock Stable's Air Patrol and ! an additional length In front of William G. Hells' Rippey in the field of nine. Carrying 123 pounds and bringing ' Jockey Al Snider his third winner ; of the day. Pep Well was clocked in ' lio 1-5. knocking a nun oi a sec-; ond off the standard held by Brook-fteid. Black Gang and Air PatroL , Naturally the track was lightning fast and in the first race Calumet's Airy broke the mark for five furlongs with time of :58 S-5. ',. With Air Patrol the favorite. Pep Well paid a 112.40 mutuel, many bettors being swayed from him be- , cause of the high impost. Snider did not hurry the 4-year-old colt In the early stages as Sea , Snack and Rippey went out to battle for pacemaking honors. Kitchen Police was close up and so was Scholarship. Approaching the tretch, the race turned into a struggle between Rippey and Sea Bnack with Pep Well and Air Patrol still back in the pack. - Rippey swung wide into the stretch and Sea Snack saved ground. Snider roused Pep Well and he moved along with the charging Air Patrol. At the end it was Pep Well In going-awar fashion with Air Patrol second and the tiring Rippey . third. - The victory was the third straight ;for Pep Well and his fifth in seven ' start for the year. The sprint gave him $8,960 to bring his 1947 earnings to $27,996. 1 The results: ' FIRST RACE Purse II So. maideni, ! -er-o1ds, S furlonfi (OB J:17Hi: ! Alrv. 118 ' (A.
