Iowa City School District- Camp Fire Girls Powwow at Reservoir By JANET BEAVER Society Editor Beware! WM Indians are swarming the area known as Turkey Creek at the Coralville Reservoir. Wild Indians wearing fringed cotton neck scarves and felt headbands, that is. About sixty Camp Fire and Bluebird Girls ages 7 to 12 from District No. 1 of the lowana Council are holding a day camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The four day camp started Monday and was scheduled to end today, but because of the rain Friday will be the last day. Each day has a new theme, according to Mrs. Robert Jones. North Liberty, director of the camp. Monday was Cowboys and Indians Day, Tuesday was Television Day, Wednesday was Flower Power Day and tomorrow will be Red, White and Blue Day.

The day begins with flag raising and opening songs and then the girls split up into four groups, nature, games and songs, crafts and cooking. The girls rotate to each group during the day. Nature activities are led by Mrs. Harvey Henry, rural route 2, and Mrs. John Yoder, 1415 Cedar Street.

They have taken each group on nature hikes to see the dam and spillway a-nd explore the area. "We identified all the wild flowers, plants, vines and of course, poison ivy," says Mrs. Henry. In the nature group the girls have identified birds by sight and sound and drawn pictures to compare different types of bird beaks. They have learned to tie different types of knots and have inspected flowers with magnifying glasses.

Mrs. Barrel Hoff, 1410 Pine Street, and Mrs. Joseph Kaipo, 228 Brown Street, are in charge of the arts and crafts. The girls made their Indian scarves and headbands, and flowers out of scraps of fabric, pine cones, and pipe cleaners. On Television Tuesday this group made puppets out of paper bags and wrote a play, "Hippie Makes Peace." They presented the play to the group at closing.

Two former camp counselors at Hantesa Camp near Boone direct the cooking classes. They are Miss Fran Luxen, Des Moines, and Miss Liz Mounsdon, Toledo, la. Their most successful project has been a new concoction called "Daiseys" made of donuts, sweetened condensed milk and colored cocoanut roasted on a stick over the fire. The cooking class also experimented with chili and will trv "pigs in a blanket" tomorrow. Games and songs are led each day by Mrs.

John Hedges, 1301 Spruce Street and Mrs. Paul Moore, 1004 Tower Court. The girls were put through their paces Wednesday when they learned how to step off an area to measure distance. Tuesday the girfs played "Let's Make a Deal" and each a costume and brought something to trade. This is the first year for the Camp Fire Girls at Turkey Creek.

They enjoy the private surroundings, although there is no running water and no shelter available. Miss Peggy Dolirer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Dolirer, 1310 Whiting Avenue Court, and (right) Miss Kathy Hamilton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
