tat FINE ARTS fHiATU Nvnty MUS Bjomer rarnr By wav of novelty Mr. Wallenstein produced Sam uel Barber's "Medea's Medi tation and Dance of Venge ance, a part of a ballet on the Medea legend originally designed for Martha Graham. It is theater music subtle in mood and strongly dramatic in development, more re markable for its striking virtuosity of instrumenta tion than for any great depth of substance. It is an exceed-, ingly grateful piece, and a brilliant performance was re ceived with unusual cordiality. Mr.

Wallenstein opened the program with Schu mann's Symphony No. 1 in a 'iat, not without reason called the "Spring," and gave it a fresh and appealing reading, The rhythmic as pects were particularly well handled, the swift changes of the Scherzo were accomplished with clean-cut deft ness, and the whole perform ance had a congenial air of lightness and grace. McCormick to Re-create Role Myron McCormick has been signed to re-create his original role of Luther Billis in "South Pacific," starring Mary Martin with Giorgio Tozzi, in Philharmonic Audi-I tonum beginning July 8. Now doing a featured comic part in "No Time for Sergeants," McCormick has been given a special leave of; absence from this show to1 come to the West Coast for "South Pacific." caeiuotvcLv KIDDII MATINSIS Tnamll, Slturdir, April S. Liliane Montevecchi I II WilUVKIIllM II IMUIJaUHJIH BY ALBERT GOLDBERG Artur Rubinstein was the piano soloist with Alfred Wallenstein and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra in Philharmonic Auditorium last night and the long lines of ticket buyers at the box- office attested to the popular ity of the combination.

Such popularity, of course, is not accidental, for Mr. Ru binstein is incontestably one of the great ones in an age of great pianists and his con junction with the Brahms Concerto in Flat always rates high among major musical experiences. In Great Form The pianist was in rare form and gave a sovereign performance of a work that is a challenge to any interpreter. It had breadth and depth of a kind that met Brahms on his own terms, and it was a magnificent pian-istic display as well as a searchingly authoritative one musically. Mr.

Rubinstein's leonine style dealt with the massive structure of the work in a monumental manner; it made: the piano ring with solid eruptions of tone that never had any hint of harshness, and it coaxed the melodies from the strings with a velvet suavity that was a constant blessing to the ear. Vigorous Opening And it was an unfailinelv sensitive performance in the best Brahmsian manner of warmth and expansiveness that never degenerated into sentimentality. The vigor of the opening movement wasl grandiose in conception, the Scherzo went with a power- tui sweep, the slow move ment was beautifully sus tained with deep introspec-! tiveness, and the finale be-! came a play with pianlstic tone ot a subtlety and charm possible only to a master like Rubinstein. The pianist has often proved his preference for Mr. Wallenstein's accompaniments and he again had reason to rejoice in an orchestral background that.

realized the symphonic scope of the work without intruding on the solo ist province and which gave him every possible leeway in a broadly flexible interpreta tion. Audie Murphy mar shals some Texas women into a battling group that stands off a bitter attack by! Indians. Organizies Women Back home, Murphy finds the women left defenseless Realizing that Indians are going to avenge the massacre he organizes the femmes, gives them firearms training ana prepares tor the tough going. Of course, while Audie plays teacher he "discovers" a spitfire girl, Kathryn Grant. Eventually Murphy is brought in for court-martial but is successfully defended against the crooked C.O.'s charges.

Since the cast Is composed mostly of women, they hold the main spotlight as far as characterizations are con cerned. Hope Emerson gets credit for some very amusing comedy touches, while Jeff Donnell, usually a comedi enne, changes type to provide the tragic note. Miss Grant supplies the romantic inter est.
