BETA SIGMA PH! PROJECT Secret Sisters Made Gifts With Hands From Heart POCATELLO, IDAHO. SUNDAY, MARCH 14, IpAHO STATE JOURNAL-SECTION C-PAGE 1 "Heart and Hand" parties are traditional winter projects with the eight city chapters of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Secret sisters work all year making gifts with their hands from the bottom of their hearts. "It is at this time that we find out how talented our sorority sisters are," said a sorority spokesman. Nell Gardner, longtime member now affiliated with Preceptor Alpha, said the idea originated from an article in the sorority magazine, "The Torch." In some cases, the names of the secret sisters are revealed with the presentation of the "Heart and Hand" gift.

For instance, Marcella Girdlestone of Xi got her hostess apron from Su Grigg, and her sorority sister, Rena Calder, received a doll fashioned from a small plastic bottle by Pam Jones. In some chapters secret sisters are not revealed until fall. Pictured here are representatives of all the chapters with the "Heart and Hand" gifts they received. Ceramic pots with macrame holders were favorite gifts, but there were many others, ranging from embroidered pillow cases to velvet painted pictures. The "Heart and Hand" parties were staged in a variety of ways from dinner at Jake's arranged for Chi by Jean Albrecht to salad bars and home parties hosted by Joan Robinson of Xi Thcta, Pam Pirrong and Myrna Cain of Xi Alpha and others.
