"MY ENGINE RAN WHEN IT WAS OFF I'd switch the ignition off but the engine wouldn't stop.

Instead it sputtered, rocked and coughed. Then I discovered WYNN'S SPIT Now my troubles are over," writes a happy user. Yes, engine "after run" caused by heavy carbon build up can be not only exasperating, but downright dangerous mechanically. So be kind to your car and yourself Add a can of WYNN'S SPIT FIRE to your gas tank today. Now available at all in five runs with a grand slam (his first ever in the majors), a solo homer, plus a single.

It marked the second time in the bigs that he connected for two homers in one game. The first time was against the Baltimore Orioles in 1978. Wockenfuss started the 1979 season playing for Manager Ralph Houk amd finished under Sparky Anderson. "I can't compare them, really. They are two different personalities.

Sparky is really on the ball. He instills a lot of confidence in the guys. He always talks to the players, likes to intimidate the other ball clubs. Before, we were the ones who were being intimidated. "Houk was a pretty easy-going guy.

As far as discipline, he more or less left it up to the players. He felt they were mature enough to know what their limitations were. "Sparky has his own set of rules and you don't break them. Sparky was nice to me and I respected him." Detroit, last season, finished in fifth-place in the American League East, trailing Baltimore, Milwaukee, Boston and New York. Wockenfuss questioned my reference to 1979 being a "bad season" for the Tigers (85-70).

"We had six teams in our division finish above .500 (including the Tigers)," he pointed out. "Now tell me what other division had that many teams finishing over No, Wockenfuss didn't challenge me to a fisticuffs duel. That kind of stuff is all behind him. "I contain my temper now," he said. "I don't even argue with umpires anymore.

Oh, sure, I at times question an umpire's call, but I do it politely. I've never been thrown out of a game." Sunday, he taught a Sunday school class at Marshallton Methodist Church. And yesterday, he was hunting deer in Wyalusing, just west of Wilkes-Barre, where he's staying with a friend. This coming Sunday, he'll be back at his church in Delaware, teaching a class. Johnny Wockenfuss admits he has found peace within himself and the world, and it has reflected in his attitude, actions and accomplishments.

He unabashedly will tell you everything has been coming up roses for him ever since he found God. The Detroit News, in a Sept. 28 front-page story by Doug Bradford, revealed the "dark-side" of Johnny Wockenfuss, Delaware's contribution to the Detroit Tigers. Wockenfuss told Bradford: "I was terrible in the minor leagues. I punched a hole in the dugout roof, I threw stones at the fans, I bumped umpires.

When I didn't do well I went home and lost my temper with my wife took it out on her. I couldn't sleep. "But now I don't worry about it. It's not my problem anymore, it's His. He'll show me what he wants me to do.

When I get in a situation I just ask myself what He would do." Johnny Wockenfuss throwing stones at fans, bumping umpires and picking on his wife? It can't be true! No, never! Our Johnny, who teaches Sunday school at Marshallton Methodist Church, could never have done those things. Or could he? "It's true. I did all those things. Everything you read in that article is the way it happened," Wockenfuss concurred. He admitted to being a curt, almost insolent, bitter man, just as Bradford described him.

"I was like that even in high school (Dickinson)," said Wockenfuss, who this past summer completed his fifth straight year in the majors, all with the Tigers. "I remember one day in football practice. I got angry because a teammate dropped the ball. I tried to punch him in the face through his face mask and almost tore my hand off. I was really mean.

But not any more. I have found God." It happened on Sunday, May 8, 1976, in the Detroit Tigers' dressing room, just before a game. Wockenfuss couldn't recall who the Tigers played that afternoon, but he had no difficulty recalling the exact date when he found God. "We have chapel service in our dressing room every Sunday before a game. Every Sunday we listen to different speakers.

One Sunday, Mike Ditka (former NFL lineman, now on the Dallas Cowboys' coaching staff) addressed us. But this particular Sunday the speaker was Bill Zeoli from Grand Rapids, an evangelist who speaks for the Lord. "He (Zeoli) said a lot of things that led to my decision. I had been going to church off and on and had not been very successful in baseball. Things had been building up inside of me.

The year before, I had a bad season. I tried everything on my own. Nothing worked out. He (Zeoli) told us there were about 10-15 players in attendance that there was no middle of the road. That you can't say yes or no, and no maybes.

"He asked if any of us wanted to make a commitment to the Lord, and that he would pray for us. I made a commitment that day, and I found that it changed my life. I settled down on the field, was able to concentrate, and it made my home life better." In 1977, playing in 53 games as an outfielder and catcher, he hit nine homers, batted in 25 runs and finished with a .274 batting average. In 1978, he experienced his best year ever in the majors. In 71 games he drilled seven homers, had 22 RBI and batted .283.

This year, he belted 15 homers, his highest ever in the majors. His final .264 batting average was below the previous year's, but he played in many more games this year, when he was used in left field, right field, first base, behind the plate, and also as a pinch-hitter and designated hitter. "This was the first year I ever played first base," he said. "I never previously played that position, not even in high school. I was really nervous at first.

But it was a challenge and I accepted it. Things really worked out well. I liked the way Sparky (Anderson, Tigers' manager) showed confidence in me. Something which didn't happen too often to me in the past. "I almost got to play a game at second base, too.

That's another position I never played before. The game was in extra innings and all the players had been used up. I was told to play second base if we tied it, but we didn't." Wockenfuss' biggest game of 1979 had to be the nightcap of the Aug. 8 doubleheader with the Texas Rangers at Tiger Stadium.
