The News Journal, Wilmington, Saturday, May 22, 1982 A5 Some would rather run apart than hang together Both the Republicans and the Democrats are interested in providing active, as opposed to token, support for their legislative candidates this time around. For the Republicans, it's nothing new. But if the Democrats do it, it will mark the beginning of a new era for them. The Democrats are known more for their willingness to run against each other than to hang together. Take these two stories of political first-timers: Republican Phil Corrozi ran for the House of Representatives for the first time in 1980.

He was one of several candidates interviewed by a Republican committee, and once he was chosen, he was supported every step of the way. He was given two "buddies" experienced legislators who helped him on the campaign trail Joe Petrilli and Bob Powell. He was given a chart, with every single day of his campaign plotted out, telling him about everything from fund-raising to writing thankyou notes after the election. "Everything was laid out, and I followed that," Corrozi said. IN MEMORIAM DEPUTY In loving memory of our son and brother, Joseph, on his 20th birthday.

Capital notebook By Celia Cohen and Rochelle Sharpe Ten years before Corrozi's first race, Richard Cordrey made his first run for the legislature.

Now the president pro tem of the Senate, Cordrey was making a bid for the House. Sussex County Democrats were encouraging him to run and promised him they would be behind him during his campaign. "They were so far behind me," a much wiser Cordrey says today, "I never saw them." Is it time to forsake a name for the sake of a mixup with a namesake? That confusing question brings us to the confusing case of the two politicians who can't seem to pull themselves apart. Charlie Oberly, the candidate for Attorney General, and Bill Oberle, the representative, are forever getting mixed up. Oberle says he has received many calls wishing him good luck on his run for attorney Obituaries general.

And he says he wouldn't be surprised if the other Mr. Oberly got complaints from constituents. The two men, who even went to school together, didn't do anything to alleviate the confusion this week. They both were surprised to discover they had scheduled fundraisers for their campaigns on the same night and in the same city. Oberle chose the Gold Key and Oberly the Dinner Bell, both in Dover.

There are some differences between the two men, however. Oberle says he spells his name the right way. And oh yes, he believes he belongs to the right party too. He is a Republican and Charlie is a Democrat. "He'll probably do well in district," Oberle said of Oberly.

cranked up again. Once upon a time, in 1978 to be precise, the first-term governor presided over the bestowal of a personal income tax cut for the Delaware taxpayers. The tax cut was followed a year later by increased benefits for welfare recipients. In an impromptu meeting in Legislative Hall recently, du Pont told a delegation from the Academy for Lifelong Learning that he would like to repeat the process of taxcut-followed-by-welfare-break break in his second and final term. The academy is a group of citizens, more than 55 years old, who meet under the auspices of the University of Delaware for educational pursuits.

It's possible du Pont could have chosen a more appreciative group to reveal his plans. What this delegation of older Delawareans wanted to know was, couldn't du Pont see his way clear to push for larger tax exemptions for pensions? Sen. John Arnold nearly lost a battle before it began. Bobby Marshall, the Wilmington Democrat with aspirations to be mayor, fought hard to have Arnold's bill assigned to the Community Affairs Committee, which Marshall chairs.

Had the bill gone there, it could automatically have been pronounced legally dead. But a coalition of suburbanites and downstaters muscled the bill into the Revenue and Taxation Committee, chaired by Sussex Countian Richard Cordrey. That leaves the matter open for more fireworks later, though in the past Cordrey has gone along with the wishes of the city delegation.
