MOVIES, STAGE AND MUSIC Eyeing Hollywood By LOUELLA O. PARSONS Oct. 4 (INS)-Just before Paulette Goddard caught the boat for New. York via the Panama, Paramount that received Charles word Boyer, the popular and romantic French actor, will be her co-star in "Hold Back the Dawn." Putting Paulette into a drama rather than another Bob Hope comedy at this time me to believe that Para is in frame of mind to cash in leads, on the dramatic role Miss Goddard plays in "The Great Dictator." Interesting about the story, "Hold Back the Dawn." written by erine Hartley Frings, it tells the true experience of her husband in a refugee camp in Mexico where aliens are detained waiting for a quota number to come into the United States.

The combination of Una Merkel and W. C. Fields is enough to set you chuckling before you ever see "The Black Dick." Yes, Una gets the femme lead in the one-andonly Fields next at Universal which calls for the girl to be both pretty and funny. Una certainly fills that bill. She's just finished "Fireman Save My Child" with Baby Sandy at SO she should feel right at home on that lot.

On the conductor's stand a WOman with a soft mop of brown hair wipes her face and smiles wearily. It's to be a night with 'Antonia Brico conducting." Miss Brico comes here often, and she pulls the crowds. There is a swift, tense tempo to her programs that is stimulating after the parlor politeness of most conductors. She asks, half humorously: what have people said about tonight's concert?" "Well, say Brico is conducting." "Oh, Brico! Not 'that woman'!" Even though she is the "only woman conductor of symphonies," at least of big orchestras, the phrase "woman irritates Miss Brico. It's still hard for a woman to get a city symphony.

Miss Brico has been guest conductor for many big American orchestras and many European, but she still doesn't have "her own orchestra." Miss Brico was orphaned early and earned her way through University of California playing piano accompaniments. By 1927 she had saved enough to study in Europe and in 1930 made her debut, conducting the Berlin Philharmonic, which had never been led by a woman before. There is no trouble with musicians for a woman conductor, but there is with orchestra boards of directors. They say, "A woman? Let's not try any innovations." She recalls one unpleasant experience. The time John Charles Thomas deprived her of a conducting engagement.
