DECEMBER 4, IIJ 18 SUNDAY MORNING. TIGER POLOISTS PLAY HARRIERS AT MIDWICK TODAY Poloists Vie Today for 16-Goal Title Steeplechase Race on at Riviera Today THE SPORTS PARADE Babe Horrell Should Be Given Every Opportunity to Make Good as Bruin Coach Before Passing Judgment BY BRAVE DYER Appointment of Babe Horrell as head football coach at U.C.L.A. comes at a time when most of us scribes are pretty busy with other tasks, but "it is only fitting that this department should some comment, even if it be make rather Bruin hurried. E. Fogelson Stable When the bloodline experts get around to the barn of E. E. Fogelson of Texas they begin to chatter to one another excitedly, "With Pennant and Equipoise dead, Dauber's the outstanding example of the Pennant blood in the United States," they exclaim. "What a stud prospect when he retires from racing." Probably Texas Mc.

Fogelson had this in mind when he forked over $35,000 to Trainer Dick Handlen of Foxcatcher Farm at Hollywood Park last summer after Dauber had bowed a tendon just before the running of the $50,000 3 year-old championship. Fogelson's trainer, Stubby Kanatzer, has given Dauber a long rest, and veterinarians recently told him they never would have guessed Dauber had suffered a bow if he hadn't told them. 3 Consequently Fogelson and Dauber are looking to Dauber, second in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont and winner in the Preakness, to be a formidable factor in the Santa Anita Handi tion of announcing Horrell's selection until the season had closed. After all, this would have been only fair to Bill Spaulding. But the boys out Westwood way say they had to do" something to pep up the squad for the Oregon State contest next' Saturday, so hence the rather hurried announcement.

(P) A brilliant aerial and ground attack engineered by Ken Heine-man brought the Texas School of Mines a smashing 26-6 upset victory today over Fresno State of California.

Heineman put the Miners in front in the second period by tossing a 29-yard touchdown pass to Charles Dean. Fresno opened the scoring earlier in the period on Tony Heeb's 15-yard run after he took a from Petersen. Heine-man, however, kicked point to give the Miners a 7-fl lead. In the third, Heineman cut loose with another aerial, this one good for 69 yards, with Dean the touchdown. Late in the same period Heine-man cut through right tackle from the Fresno 26, reversed his field, and skipped across the goal line.

Matheson kicked point. Reserves scored the last touchdown in the fourth, with Buddy Black going over. AGUA CALIENTE SELECTIONS BY TAUL LOWRY -Rare Tree, Jeannette 1, i Voliu 2. Peach Bloom, Parade Step, Pipe Down. 3.

Pro Elevens Play Today Bulldogs Favored Over Packers in Game at Gilmore 7 BV FRANK FINCH Those pestiferous Packers from Salinas, coached by the tumultuous Mister Eduardo Storm, come to; town again today bound and determined to do something about Gus Henderson's elegant Los Angeles Bulldogs. This game, carded for Gilmore Stadium at 2:15, is about limntv-urnDth time these pro nig skin rivals have met in the last three years, yet Packer-Bulldog games never lacK zipper ana zirtg. DOUBLE WINNERS The Bulldogs, highest scoring salaried swineskinning squad in the country, have poked the Packers this season here and in San Francisco and yet Mister Storm and his robust renegades still think they can lick 'em.

-Their most recent engagement saw the Bulldogs emerge victorious by a 14-10 count at Kezar Stadium last Sunday, the Men-dersonians scoring both their touchdowns after Tom Bushby, bulky Packer halfback from Kansas, had tallied 10 points for Salinas. The came ended a minute after the Stanford combination of Joe Vigna to Grant Stone had completed a pass for a first down on the Bulldog 3-yard line. That's what kind of a game it was. EX-BEARS START Mister Storm, who is football's Kb. 1 fuss-budget when it comes to storming on the field and heckling the officials, has named a potent backfield that includes Al Thorell and Perry Thomas of California, Jack Sobrero of Santa Clara and Bushby.

'Brother Henderson has backs to burn, but they'll probably ignite themselves once they get Into action. The fact that Gus nominated Bill Howard, Gordon Gore, Dan Barnhart and Red Elder for his starting backfield indicates that he isn't planning to pull his punches against the Packers. with a chance to land on the all-star team that's due to play the National Pro League champions here Jan. 15, the Bulldogs and Packers can be expected to put a little extra umph in their efforts today. It had been stated that they "would scour the country" for the best man available. The public read first one story and then another about Buck Shaw, Bernie Bierman, Harry Stuhldreher, Matty Bell, Jock Sutherland and half a dozen other famous mentors being "in line" for the Bruin job. Authorities were virtually powerless to stop this speculation, it is true, and in some instances encouraged it, but the general reaction is one of disappointment that the Bruins did not get a big name coach. Now none of this has been fair to Horrell. Babe has the backing of some very smart people who know football.

He has the backing of the Bruin football players. That he has Berkeley's backing goes without saying. The day will come when U.C.L.A. will divorce herself from Berkeley and everything will go ahead much more smoothly. But for the present Berkeley's backing seems to be needed.

Horrell cannot be blamed because the Bruins have been anything but world beaters in recent years. After all, he was only an assistant and football assistants seldom have much say except to carry out orders. What I am trying to say is that Horrell should be given every opportunity to make good before judgment is passed. After all, this USED to be the American custom. My advice to Babe is this: Pick out the local high school team with the best players and invite that coach to be your freshman mentor next fall.

Andy Smith did it once and wound up with a wonder team. You can be next. Watch Michigan's 1939 Team The frost is on the pumpkin and the moleskins are suffocating in attar de Mothball in the Big Ten sector now, but the tip is out already to watch Michigan in 1939. After a long siege of imitating doormats the Wolverines clicked this season to win six, lose one and tie one to finish In a tie for second place in the conference. Most important, Michigan blanked Michigan State and Ohio State, teams that had trounced Michigan four years running.

The only defeat was a 7-6 heart-breaker in which the Wolverines did everything but outscore Minnesota. In the post-season picking, Michigan placed three men on the All-Big Ten team Ralph Heikkinen, All-American guard; Forest Evashevski, quarterback, and Tom Harmon, halfback. The latter two are Graduation will thin the ranks of Fritz Cinslcr's club next June, but ample replacements are available to once more make Michigan a dominant figure in Big Ten football. Isbell was a riot for the collegians in the All-Star game at Chicago and has been going great guns ever since Detroit is the hottest spot for pro football right now, with Chicago, Green Bay and New York well up In the running.
