FIRE: Storage shed, gas meter also damaged Vaughn told Schmidt he was sleeping on his couch when he awoke to find the back of the couch on fire. Schmidt said Vaughn was alone in the residence when the fire broke out. Firefighters spent about 90 minutes extinguishing the fire, then were called back about 8 a.m. because of some hot spots. The mobile home was completely destroyed, with smoke and fire damage throughout, Taylor said.

"If they've got even a minute or two minutes burn time, those things go really quick," Taylor said. Besides the residence itself, the fire damaged a storage shed and a gas meter on the north side of the property, Taylor said. Taylor said firefighters think the fire started in a window air conditioner near the couch where Vaughn was sleeping. Vaughn told Schmidt he'd had problems with his air conditioner earlier in the season and had sprayed about a whole can of WD40 onto the motor. "Any time you have an appliance malfunctioning, have a qualified service person look at it," Taylor said.

"When somebody thinks they're going to fix something and they don't have the knowledge, they're asking for trouble." WORLDCOM: Company misrepresented expenses CONTINUED FROM PAGE A1 CONTINUED FROM PAGE A1 WorldCom also said it had asked its auditor, KPMG LLP, to review its records for possible problems during the period. KPMG took over from Arthur Andersen LLP as the company's outside auditor in mid-May. Andersen had approved the company's financial statements for 2001 and the first quarter of this year, which were the subject of the stunning restatement that roiled the stock market last week. Before the report was made public, SEC Chairman Harvey Pitt said that "criminal charges may be too good" for those responsible for the WorldCom accounting scandal. "We think the American public is entitled to a full accounting of what went wrong here," Pitt said on NBC's "Today." "I don't want to prejudge any case but from what I've heard, I'm outraged.

The American public is outraged. Criminal charges may be too good for the people who brought about this mess," Pitt said. WorldCom, based in Clinton, disclosed last week that it misrepresented $3.8 billion in expenses to make earnings appear greater. The company has laid off thousands a and seen its stock become almost worthless and is on the verge of bankruptcy. The company's woes, coming on the heels of major accounting problems with Enron Andersen and Xerox has traumatized stock markets.

Pitt said Sunday that if the WorldCom report is truthful "and Lotteries Powerball None of the tickets sold for the Super Kansas Cash Powerball game Saturday night No player hit the jackpot Saturmatched all six numbers drawn, day night in the "Super Kansas which were: Cash" drawing, worth an estimat4-33-35-36-45 ed $475,000. In the first hour of trading, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 50.19 at 9,293.45, after falling 26.66 Friday. The broader market was mixed. The Nasdaq composite index fell 12.17, or 0.8 percent, to 1,451.04, having gained 4.01 Friday. The Standard Poor's 500 index advanced 1.12, or 0.1 percent, to 990.94, having slipped 0.82 Friday.

The Commerce Department said construction spending fell by 0.7 percent in May to the lowest level in five months. The Institute for Supply Management said its index of business activity rose to 56.2 percent in June from 55.7 percent in May. It was the fifth straight month that manufacturing activity increased. WorldCom fell 75 cents to 8 cents as the telecommunications company told the government today it is reviewing financial records for 1999-2001 for possible accounting problems in addition to the $3.8 billion in disguised expenses it disclosed last week. WorldCom's stock had not traded since last Tuesday, when it revealed its accounting problems. Also, shares of TRW rose 82 cents to $57.80 after defense contractor Northrop Grumman said today it agreed to buy TRW for $7.8 billion, nearly $2 billion more than its original offer. The market has been pounded since mid-May because of a string of accounting scandals, strife in the Middle East and grim expectations for second quarter earnings. Analysts say that not only are investors worried about the outcome of second-quarter earnings reports, which companies begin reporting this month, but also whether those results are accurate.
