By middle to late July, Phase 2 of an ongoing expansion plan will give the hotel's amusement park, called Grand Slam Canyon, several more stomach-flopping thrill rides, a theater, a midway of games and some attractions for the younger set. "We're targeting families for sure," said Ron Garrett, director of marketing for Circus Circus Hotel. "Las Vegas used to have very little for kids to do. Now there is a lot, and we want to expose families to the fun they can have here." The Grand Slam expansion offers families a chance to play together and provides children with a controlled environment to go to inside the hotel while their parents spend time at the gaming tables.

An all-day pass to the park, called an Unlimited Ride Wrist Band, costs $12 and buys 12 hours of all the repeat rides a child could possibly desire. Otherwise, park patrons can choose a general admission fee of $3, which includes a ticket to one ride. Although park rules do not specify a minimum age for uri-chaperoned entrance to the park, gate attendants can refuse entrance to children they deem too young to be in the park unattended. A height requirement of 42 inches stands for several of the rides. The $10-million expansion's showpieces begin with a ride called Sand Pirates, a reproduction of a 16th-century Spanish galleon that swings back and forth at gut-defying speeds.

Then there is the Drifter, a balloon Ferris wheel that takes to the sky of the dome for panoramic views of the park. Canyon Cars is a Grand Slam version of bumper cars, and B.C. Bus takes participants on a wild ride through the Stone Age.
