D2 Tha Nawi Journal, Wilmington, Saturday, Nov. 19, 1983 People Bishops Espedahl "You know, I've never set eyes on a king," Walesa told an Oslo newspaper in an interview in Gdansk. "A boyhood dream of mine was to see a living monarch. That was what I had been looking most forward to now." Walesa earlier announced that Thursday the ship Cousteau has been piloting in a test crossing of the Atlantic was damaged for the second time by a storm, But, he told the Cousteau Society, "We have lost only the hardware. The brains who conceived the system are already at work.

Give me a little time and we will do it again." Walesa will miss meeting the king Lech Walesa, leader of Poland's outlawed Solidarity labor union movement, says his main regret about not going to Oslo to pick up his Nobel Peace Prize is that he won't meet Norway's king. than 100 bishops joined SO representatives from women's organizations to discuss the theological and historical factors that led to women's current status In the church. A growing number of scholars believe women have been barred from the Catholic clergy for primarily secular rather than sacred reasons. Feminists see the chief problem as patriarchal structures that were absorbed into the church despite the tendency toward equality found in the earliest decades of the church and in the example of Jesus' treatment of women. As feminism has challenged church policy and women have 'become more opposed to the restrictions against them, many have left the church or exist at the fringe.

Church leaders have become increasingly worried about this trend, and the pastoral letter is seen as a way to address it. By adopting the pastoral letter on Hispanics, the bishops highlighted an area of the church that is burgeoning. Hispanics make up a third or more of all Catholics in some parts of the country, including Miami, Los Angeles and New York. In the Wilmington Diocese's jurisdiction Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland a recent census done for the diocese shows more than 11,000 Hispanics. The bishops' document recognizes the place of Hispanic culture within the church and pledges resources to aid ministries to Hispanics, including programs to fight injustice.

Continued from Dl and distressing situation. Officials of the conference agreed that certain tensions had complicated their relationship with the Vatican but denied that the pope had been critical of them in his recent admonitions. Some bishops suggested that the pope was actually talking more to the American laity than to the bishops in urging greater moral discipline. Jmesch said the pastoral letter on women would include a look at their history and present status, explore "ways that the talents of women could be better used in the service of the church" and "encourage and affirm" the roles women are: already fulfilling. Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, who was chairman of the war and peace committee, which produced the statement on that issue, said the issue of women was "one more serious matter we face.

It is not a passing phenomenon, and we cannot respond by ignoring it or treating it superficially." Some prelates, including Bishop Ernest L. Unterkoefler of Charles-toil, S.C., noted that some women had voiced objections to an all-male group writing about women. Unterkoefler said the issue of "male dominance" was important and should be addressed in the pastoral letter. conference on women in the church was held for the two days before the bishops' meeting. For once he's a serious man Comedian Bill Cosby has earned his fortune making jokes, but he is serious about what he and his wife consider a slight to black American artists by U.S. museums. Cosby says he won't give the Boston Museum of Fine Arts a work he owns by 19th-century black painter Henry E. Tanner for use in a major exhibition of American art that drew protests because it contained no black artist. The mus-seum should include works by more than one black artist, Cosby said in a statement.

Under FCC rules, however, a cable company must carry television station signals to subscribers within 35 miles of the station. In WDPB's case, that was 35 miles from the Seaford Post Office, which covers most of Sussex County.

Farlow says WDPB will continue to carry WHYY programming. WDPB supporters succeeded in mustering the support of the Delaware Senate in a recent special session. The Senate, in an 18-0 vote, with three senators absent, urged WHYY to cooperate with WDPB during the fund-raising campaign set for Dec. 3-13. Senate resolution 113 reminded WHYY that while WDPB receives a $25,000 annual grant from the state, it relies on the fund-raising campaign for operating funds.

The resolution also stated that WHYY annually receives $125,000 from the state. The Sussex County Council earlier this week agreed to write a letter supporting WDPB's attempt to participate in the WHYY fund-raising drive. Farlow said WDPB will probably be prepared to do its own fund raising sometime in 1984. In the meantime, the cardboard placard telling local donors where to send their contributions may be the station's only alternative, he said. Ullwljlilil'iV EACH By The Box.
