Today will mark the formal opening of the largest suburban department store in Upstate New York. Blaze Dama Near An early morning fire yes-, terday caused an estimated $100,000 damage to a 10-family apartment house under construction on Milton Avenue near Hinsdale Road in Camil- lus. Fairmount Volunteer Fire Department responded to the 6:45 a.m. telephone alarm and were aided by the Caraillus Fire Department and the Solvay ladder truck.

Clark Motondo, assistant fire chief of Fairmount, said it took about two hours to bring the blaze under control. Fire- 100,000 men were at the scene all morning. Cause of the fire is undetermined. The apartment building was to he part of Elm Hill West apartments on Milton Avenue. It was a two and a half story building with a brick veneer.

A spokesman for Garfield Real Estate in charge of renting the 200 apartments and townhouses which make up Elm Hill West, said the building which burned was just short of being completed. He estimated damage at close to $100,000. Dey Brothers at Shopping- down opens formally today and viewers and visitors will see what has been hailed as the largest complete suburban department store in Upstate New-York. Previously, main floor departments which have been opened to the public have included apparel for, men, boys and girls, teen-agers, and infants, women's sportswear, toiletries, cosmetics, notions and stationery. Shoppingtown has many innovations for a suburban store, including a base-' ment department and a restaurant. There actually are four main entrances to the store, two on each level, and additional parking spaces for 450 autos. Vandals invaded two gravel beds over the weekend, aging three machines of the Onondaga County Highway Department.

Most summer appointments wiH 1 be made in areas where (federal installations are most numerous, the commission said. It added the chances of summer employment will depend on the number of jobs to be filled in the area where application for employment is made, the number of persons competing for the same kind of job in the same area and their qualifications and an individual's score in the written test. Minimum -age for applicants is 18 but this limitation will be waived for high school graduates who may be appointed after they reach their 16th birth- day.

A written test will be required. It is designed to measure clerical skills, vocabulary, reading comprehension, abstract reasoning and table and chart interpretation. Those who passed the Office and Science Assistant examination for the summer of 1966 need not take the written test again unless they wish to improve their scores. Application forms may be obtained from college placement offices, the Auburn, Ithaca, Malone, Ogdensburg, Oswego, Plaitsburg, Saranac Lake, Watertown and Syracuse Post Offices, or the office of the Interagency Board of Examiners in the O'Donnell Building, Syracuse.
