C4 The News-Journal papers Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1987 Eagles get real test against Redskins Eagles honor greats of past Carmichael and played briefly with the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys. Montgomery was traded to the Detroit Lions following the '84 season for linebacker Garry Cobb, who is still with the team. Still, neither player has any bitter feelings toward the organization that once fired them and is now honoring them. "This is a business and I realize that," said Montgomery.

"I wasn't real happy with the Eagles when I left, but after I was traded to Detroit I realized how good I had it in Philadelphia, where the players, coaches and fans cared about me." "I still consider the Eagles' organization as family," said Carmichael. "Even when I played for other teams, in my heart I was always an Eagle. And I always will be." 1 EAGLE EYES After Sunday's 28-23 victory over St. Louis the Eagles' coaches voted quarterback Randall Cunningham as the offensive player of the game and also honored linebacker Seth Joyner on defense and running back Bobby Morse on special teams Defensive end Clyde Simmons, who blocked a field-goal attempt Sun- Montgomery, Carmichael feted think about things like this because you're too busy trying to survive," said Carmichael, who caught 589 passes for 8,978 yards in his 13 years with the Eagles. "Now that I'm an old man and able to look back over my career, this honor and playing in the Super Bowl have to be my two greatest thrills." Montgomery, who carried the ball 1,465 times for 6,538 yards in his eight seasons in Philadelphia, also said he was honored by his selection, but he admitted he felt awkward.

"It's a little uncomfortable, because I've never been one who liked being the center of attention," he said. "But also because of some of the people who went before me and deserve to be selected, players like Tommy McDonald and Pete Retzlaff. I'm looking forward to the day when they can join us." Ironically, neither Carmichael nor Montgomery got to finish his career in Philadelphia. Carmichael was released after the 1983 season By KEVIN NOONAN Staff reporter PHILADELPHIA No player in the Eagles' 54-year history has carried the football as many times, or as far, as Wilbert Montgomery. And no player in Eagles' history has caught as many passes, for as much yardage, as Harold Carmichael.

That's why those two will join the 11 former Eagles currently in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on the new Eagles' Honor Roll, which will be unveiled at halftime of Sunday's game between the Eagles and Washington Redskins at Veterans Stadium. There will be a permanent Honor Roll display in the second level corridor of the Vet, behind sections 207-208. Each year, one or two new members will be inducted. The Eagles in the Hall of Fame are former owner and coach Bert Bell, a charter inductee in 1963; Steve Van Buren (inducted in 1965); Chuck Bednarik ('67); Alex Wojcie-chowicz ('68); Earle "Greasy" Neale ('69); Pete Pihos (70); Norm Van Brocklin (71); Bill Hewitt (71); Ollie Matson (72); Jim Ringo ('81) and Sonny Jurgensen ('83). "When you're playing, you never Fuzzy bowl picture should clear soon Montgomery day, was also given credit for blocking the extra point after the Cards first TD, which was initially credited to Reggie White.

Coach Buddy Ryan said he wanted Simmons to get the game ball for special teams, "but I was outvoted" by the other coaches Reggie White has recorded seven sacks in four games this year, which would translate into 28 sacks in a 16-game schedule. But White isn't happy with his season so far, and one reason is he claims he's being constantly held. White has talked to the officials about it and Monday Ryan said he even called the league office "and cried about it. But it didn't do any good," said Ryan. "You can't cry about officials and injuries everybody has them." There are still 350 tickets for Sunday's game with Washington, 900 for next Sunday's game with the New York Giants and 4,000 for the rematch with the Cardinals in three weeks.

Big Eight runner-up. Think Notre Dame-Oklahoma would draw some viewers? Worst thing that could happen: Pick a couple of teams such as Florida State and Auburn who end up with late regular-season defeats. The Fiesta, eager to permanently be considered a major-major, is trying to keep the momentum going from last year's national championship game. Ferris tops Spartans' in Corrections Classic John Warren recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for one touchdown and hooked up with Ray Doman on a 3-yard passing play and two-point conversion, all in the first quarter, to give Ferris School a 14-12 victory over St. Mark's High's junior varsity in the seventh annual Corrections Classic football game Monday night at Baynard Stadium.

James Hall had three sacks and Corey Thompson had seven unassisted tackles to lead the defensive effort for Ferris (5-1). St. Mark's junior varsity is 1-6. Proceeds from the game go to the Delaware Association of Blind Athletes. Sports briefs Syracuse might be a safer bet.

The unbeaten Orangemen finish on Nov. 21. "If I had to vote today," said Sugar Bowl president Jerry Romig, "and I had an unbeaten Syracuse in one hand and Auburn having to play Alabama in the other, well He shrugged then, which probably was good news for Syracuse. Best thing that could happen: The Sugar gets two unbeaten teams be they LSU, Auburn or Syracuse. Worst thing that could happen: Both Auburn and LSU lose down the stretch.

The Sugar would no longer have an unbeaten team to draw national attention. COTTON How much does the Cotton want Notre Dame? It has had somebody there nearly every game. The Cotton Bowl committee has seen the Irish players more than their own mothers have. With the Southwest Conference unable to provide a highly ranked champion, the Cotton badly needs a glamour team to sway TV ratings from the competing Fiesta and Citrus in the same time slot. Best thing that could happen: Texas finishes 9-2 and wins the SWC, Notre Dame agrees to come, upsets Miami and arrives in Dallas not only with a 10-1 record and high ranking but also the probable Heisman winner in Tim Brown.

Continued from CI play looming here between a bowl and a university from the same city. But it is hard to imagine the two not coming to terms. They need one another too much. Best thing that could happen for the Orange: Miami whips through Notre Dame and South Carolina and the bowl has two 11-0 teams colliding New Year's night. Worst thing that could happen: Not only does Miami get upset in one of its last games, but Nebraska beats Oklahoma and then turns around and loses at Colorado the next week in a possible icebox in Boulder (the Cornhuskers lost there last year 20-10).

SUGAR The intriguing question here is if the Sugar would be willing to put not one but two SEC teams into the game. LSU and Auburn are both unbeaten, and there is some sentiment in the South for such a game. The problem? While LSU has clear sailing if it gets past Alabama this week, Auburn has a brutal finish with Florida State, Georgia and Alabama, the latter on Nov. 27. i If the Sugar would match LSU and Auburn and then Auburn would lose to Alabama, it would no longer be a match of unbeatens but rather a good SEC game.

Runaway Loye Critter locker room Monday afternoon, less than 24 hours after they stunned the Cardinals on quarterback Randall Cunningham's 9-yard touchdown pass to, Gregg Garrity with 40 seconds left to play. "Looking at the film Monday morning it was obvious we didn't play very well against the Cardinals," said Cunningham.

"But the important thing is we still found a way to win. You can't expect to go out and play great every game, but the good teams, the playoff teams, find a way to win anyhow. And that's what we did. "It would have been easy for usito sag and give up after the Cardinals went ahead with 1:50 left to play but we didn't give up. If anything, we were more confident.

We just knew we were going to find a way to score, find a way to win." Now they have to find a wayjto win against two of the NFL's best, the two teams that played in the NFC title game last year. "Beating the Cardinals was nice, but I don't think it was significant in terms of seeing what kind of football team we are," said tackle Joe Conwell. "Beating the Cardinals doesn't establish us as a contender in the NFC East, it doesn't show we can play with the best. But if we beat the Redskins this week, that will really be significant. Nothing against the Cardinals, but they're not in the same class as the Redskins.

"Right now, we're riding the ience. But if we beat the Redskins, we'll establish ourselves as legitimate contenders." -i won the league title and the automatic playoff berth that goes with it, stayed 17th. DelTech reaches tourney in volleyball and soccer Athletic Director John Shew said Monday that Delaware Technical and Community College has qualified for Region 19 tournament play in volleyball and soccer. Correction It was incorrectly reported in Saturday's editions of The News Journal that Milford High's 2U7 football victory over Dover was its first over the Senators in 10 years. Milford last defeated Dover in 1979 6-0. Continued from CI how far we've still got to go. "We still have a good shot at the playoffs, but only if we keep winning. If we lose the next two games, we can kiss the playoffs goodbye.

But if we win the next two, we'll be in good shape." Of course, it won't be easy. All year Eagles Coach Buddy Ryan has said the Redskins are the best team in the NFL and Monday afternoon he said it again. And the Giants, despite starting the season 0-5, are still the defending Super Bowl champs. When asked to rate the division race so far, Ryan put the 'Skins and Giants ahead of everybody else, with the Eagles and Cardinals still a few steps behind. But that doesn't mean Ryan thinks his team is doomed to defeat Sunday.

"I hope we play well enough to beat them," he said. "Everybody's got to play their best and if that happens, I think we can beat them." But when asked if he thought his team was as good as the 'Skins and Giants, Ryan snorted and said, "That's a dumb question." In other words, no. So the first real test for the new and improved Eagles comes in a few days, when the Redskins and their 6-1 record visit the Vet. "I think that game will tell the story," said wide receiver Mike Quick. "Washington might be the best team in the league right now.

We beat Washington and we'll be on our way." That was the mood in the Eagles' Poll Continued from CI season goes on, because that seems to be the route the teams that reach the playoffs take," said Collick. "In the past, we've started off ranked highly and then lost a few and dropped, so I'm happy we're still on the rise." Meanwhile, unbeaten Holy Cross remained in the top spot for the sixth straight week, while Appalachian State stayed second for the third week in a row. James Madison, which is led by former Delaware State coach Joe Purzycki, moved from fourth to third and North Texas State climbed from fifth to fourth. Jackson State, which was third last week, dropped to fifth after a 17-7 loss to Division I-A Southern Mississippi. Two teams from the Yankee Conference, of which Delaware is a member, stayed in the top 20.

New Hampshire remained sixth after a victory over Rhode Island, while Richmond, which has already Compiled from dispatches network's failure to show Hussein breaking the tape Sunday. Kubek, McCarver sign NEW YORK Baseball commentators Tony Kubek and Tim McCarver have signed new mul-tiyear contracts with their respective networks. There had been speculation that Kubek's contract might not be renewed if NBC had lured McCarver from ABC, but NBC announced Monday that Kubek had been signed to the new contract.

ABC then announced Monday night that McCarver also signed a new multiyear contract. Kubek will again be paired with play-by-play announcer Bob Costas as NBC's No. 2 baseball announcing team next season. Vin Scully and Joe Garagiola will continue as the network's top team. ROSE Given the chaos in the Big Ten, the Pasadena people must be overjoyed at UCLA's rush to power. A 10-1 Bruin team would get them the Los Angeles TV market and carry some national notice, things this game will badly need if it is not to be drubbed in the ratings battle with the Sugar. Best thing that could happen: UCLA finishes impressively, and Michigan State wins the Big Ten with an 8-2-1 record. Lorenzo White will draw some attention. A preliminary autopsy report on the body of the estranged wife of basketball star Darryl Dawkins listed her cause of death Monday as possible suicide. Mercer County Prosecu tor Pete Koemg said toxicology reports from the autopsy of Kelly Barnes Dawkins, 28, will not be available for several weeks. However, he said a vial of Kelly Dawkins medication that had been prescribed to another family member was open and on a night table beside Mrs. Dawkins' bed, with some of the pills missing. Authorities said they also found a brief note beside the bed that appeared to have been left by Mrs.

Dawkins. There were no signs of foul play. No support for Cardinals ST. LOUIS Those fans who came to Busch Stadium showed little emotion for the St. Louis Cardinals, an NFL team believed headed out of town.

St. Louis, in recent years one of the NFL's losingest franchises, drew only 24,586 its smallest non-strike crowd since 1983 to witness its 28-23 loss to Philadelphia Sunday. No-shows in the Busch Stadium gathering were listed at 6,029. On Thursday, less than 72 hours before game time, Cardinals owner William V. Bidwill dropped a bombshell.

He rejected a proposal for a outdoor stadium. Bidwill met the next day with his players. He did not tip his hand on his plans for the team but left a large hint by telling them not to buy homes where they now live. ABC-TV misses finish NEW YORK Winner Ibrahim Hussein was thrilled when he crossed the finish line at the New York City Marathon, but television viewers weren't. Angry viewers swamped ABC with calls to complain about the Scralched-Parfy-goer.
