a I I I I I I 1 A A DAWSON'S FORT WAYNE WEEKLY TIMES. we A A. D. FORT WAYNE, ALLEN CO. WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 8, 1860.

-y VOL. 20. NO. 243 DAWSON WEEKLY TIMES. Shall the hind day of die of his Constri? be by our isens? lp.

portentous times when discord pint in or the land, no sentiments opportunity should and be neglected of run peace patriotism. Surely the 22nd of February is hot to be overlooked by us. There are still patriots in the land who will not be overslaughed and beslimed by rampant fanaticism. On the 2d inst.at the witching hour of hight, a terrific onslaught was made on the dence of Mons. Grojean, in Hanna's addition by a crowd of maurauders, and sundry and divers doors and windows smashed.

The assailants, however, did not come off scathless, for there being a number of persons in the house at the time, (a dance being on hand,) a rather rough time was had before France capitulated. We understand that some of our nice young men were in the disgraceful row. to The democracy of Elkhart county hare gotten into a fuss about the Goshen It appears that A. Heath claims that he bought the Democrat of Lowry at large price--paid $1,500 and the chattie mortgage for an unpaid anthotined Lowry to enter and take session of the office if the defeasance were not complied with; which not having been done, Lowdid take possession, and subsequently refused ry to surrender the office on the payment of the lawful balance. So we bare the story, and that Heath is the victim to a large amount.

Well! some things can be done as well as others, and it seems from the abore, if true, that to have an organ is the great desideratum of Mr. Lowry. This is only one side of the story. The offices of Sheriff and Auditor andTreasurer of this county are calling out a long list of anxious candidates- -many will call themselves, but few will be chosen by king caucus. He is to pack conventions and decide, and that will be called "the voice of the people," which is times called voice of God," an awful profanation of the name of the Deity.

We do hope that a ticket of high moral worth and capability will be chosen. It will be better for the whole people and the whole democracy. Anthony Roiset, aged to enty-two years, hating himself in his father's barn, about nine miles from our city, on the evening of the 30th ult. Ho was a young man of excelient character, and his melancholy end is deeply plored by all who know him. His friends say that for some time it was evident that he was not in his right mind, and they attribute it to a disappointment in love.

Requiescat in pice. or Kiser and Teguneyer are about to commence the building of a saw mill on the canal, just west of Edsall's mill. It will be fitted with a circular saw and a lath and planing machine. We are always glad to no notice such enterprises -and from the character given us of those gen tlemen, we have no doubt they will succeed.Success attend them. It is a pleasant thing for us to contemplate with what high regard "old line whigs" are regarded by the Republicans and the Democracy of the present Congress.

Smith of North Caro lina, and Pennington of Nex Jersey are the fa vored and Corwin of Ohio migat bare been bad he kept his mouth shut. lle has lived out hi, day, and passed the age of his usefulness and v. opine that to day be stauds before the county divested of all the distinction whin', he obtained an the palmy days of the whig party l1o has uneasured himself. James Chem, a Newlight preacher, I was on Sunday 23th ult, arrested while in ti.c pulpit, by the Shenif of Howard County, Ind, ou the charge of alultery. In Aden County there is no untaning given by the statute to adul tery, but in Howard County they appear to hold otherwise as to preacher Chew.

We reckon Mi Chew could tell what adultery is, if he choose (Chews). Too many "yaller legged chickens" dotrn there. The Crushen Democret announces the fol lowing gentlemen as those who want to go to Congress in this district, viz: Dr. Sturgis, Allen Hamilton and F. P.

Randall, of Allen W. Sprott, of DeKalb; G. W. McConnell, of Steuben; Ellison, of LaGrange; Alverd, of Noble; Graves, of Kosciusko, and I. B.

McDonald of Whitley. 0-T Geo. Hunt, known well at this city, died a few. days ago at Peru, Ind. He was a Miami Indian, and we think educated at Georgetown, Ky.

He lived a prodigal's -how be died we know not. E- W. H. Gibson, of Ohio, the defaulting exTreasurer of that State--lately convicted in the Court of Common Pleas, of Franklin Ohio, and his penalty fixed at imprisonment in the Penitentiary, has been granted a new trial. His 1 co defaulting brother-in-law, Breslin, ex Treasurer, is safe in Canada- -and he will be safe in Ohio from the date of the granting a new trial.

The law wasn't made for big rascals and politicansbut those who steal tarkies for a living are convicted and forever degraded. There are a lot of young men idling around this city, who are, we think, in a nght line for the penitentiary. Go to work you scoan dreis -even at woodsawing as preferable to living on some other person's bard earnings. Michael Diviney who became insane few days ago was taken to the Insane Assylam this morning. That institution must be crowded, as they send back Mfr Kness of Perry Township in order to make room for Diviney.

There are two insane patients remaining in our county jail. tr J. N. Free, the freedom rollet, was last week sent from Cincinnati to the Ohio Insane Asylum. He was through this region not long ago, and some editors were foolish enough to give him a notice.

A now paper is about to start at City, Whitley cousty, to be called the The Argus, and which is to be Republican in politics. The proprietors had better prepare to go into bankruptcy soon after the Orst issue -as the surest means of preventing a worse state of af. fairs. The thing in impracticable existing a well established paper already there, and one which for efficiency basemerited claims to good sap port, As our advice is gratuitous and uncalled for, we hope we shall be considered equally disinterested, bat should our remarks now be considered out of place, we ask the editor of the Ar. gus to keep his silence until next December, and then let ont.

The thing has been so often tested that we wonder why gentlemen will go blindly forward to disaster. 07 Yesterday, Friday, February 8rd, Stephens, the wife-murderer, was hung in the city of New York, and his namesake. Stephens of Harper's Ferry notoriety was brought to his tri- al for his participation in that bloody affair. 40003 0 Colerick's Hall, in this city, to a luigo audience. Let those who desire to read maudlin s'ories of love, madness, adrenture, etc, gratify their morbid tastes by sabseribing to some paper like "Ned Buntline's Own," or t1 the New York Ledger bus in dais wide awake! world; in these stirring times they must no longer expect a lite newspaper to cater to their app tites and neglect thereby to publish matter of moment, which should be sown broadcast in the community. In seine of oar utekly exchanges, which are so small that they could not give even a synopsis of a tithe of what is daily transpiring of the deepest interest and importance, we find that one balf of their columns is occupied by tawdry tales and old Joe Millerisms. 46 Let this be reformed altogether." Hon. S. P.

Chase wis elected United States Senator from Ohio on the And instant. The vote was an follows: Chase 75 Pugh 54; Corwin 5. What do you the way of family in the grocery There surely nothing desirable but can be found at Heary Dis's, His stock is peculiar in this, what his goods are all of the choicest and rarest kind and sold at the very lowest possible rates. And then are not Messrs. Johnsing and Obls there to wait upon the ladies and gentlemen who may tavor them with their patronage.

We apprehend that to be an indisputable fact. Call, examine and then you will surely purchase. A woman about 24 years of age, by the name of Marietta Hughs, residing with family south of the Railroad left on Friday evening. She told several persons that she intended to drown herself--that she was not going to live to disgrace hersell and family. She intimated that she was enciente.

That a railroad mau had deceived her. Sbe has not been heard of since. A number of young gentlenen who have little to do, and fancy they have less to learn, are giving one horse, or, rather, one car or calf exhibition, around Noble and the adjacent countics Mr. Augustus M.
