Pomona Netters Win Pomona College netters upset previously undefeated Caltech, 7-2, in a Southern California Conference match on the winners' courts yesterday. Registered Trade-Mark, Goodall-Sanford, Inc LOUISVILLE, April 24 Grandpere finished third to Mel Hash in an overnight allowance race at six furlongs today, but the California-bred Derby eligi ble was not disgraced. It was his first start in three months and, on top of thab, he suffered bad racing luck. Crowd ed at the three-eighths pole after going out head and head with Galedo and Woodford Sir, the Mrs. J.

P. Adams color-bearer was taken up by jockey bteve Brooks. Takes No Chances Grandpere had drawn the rail position and Brooks. was under orders to take no chances with his mount Grandpere closed well after being steered to the outside of the field and worked out an additional eighth. Mel Hash, who has been running in Arkansas, won the race by a head from Galedo.

The lat ter was three and one-half lengths in front of Grandpere. Woodford Sir was fourth. All four are Kentucky Derby eligi-bles. Markight, who completed the field, was the only noneligi-ble in the race. The time was 1:12 35.

Grandpere was hammered down to 1 to 2, and failed to impress the Kentucky hardboots, who naturally can see nothing in the Derby but the Calumet's Coal town and Citation. Does Him Good But today's race, after his length' layoff, will do Grandpere a world of good. Trainer Ernie Shaw will not start him again until the Derby, but will give his charge a distance work about Wednesday. "I'm afraid Grandpere is com ing up to the Derby a little short, but we couldn't help it," Shaw said today." "The abscess he. suffered on the Coast forced us to curtail our training plans." The resuit of the Wood Me morial in New York today rounded out the line on the prob able Derby field next Saturday.

It looks like not more than 9 or 10 starters. Earn Derby Spots Only My Request, Mount Mar cy and Better Self appear to have earned spots as the result of their efforts in the Wood. Salmagundi, the Santa Anita Derby winner, was fourth, beaten seven and one-half lengths. My Request conquest was his third stakes in a row, he previ ously having won both ends of the Experimental Handicap. Mount Marcy was the surprise of the race.

He is a son of Mah-moud and Maud Muller and owned by C. V. Whitney. Mount Marcy started once as a 2-year-old and had won his only previous start of the '48 campaign, at six furlongs.
