AP Slock prices buckled again today taider the weight of heavy selling for both accounts. Speculators for the advance endeavored to maintain bullish enthusiasm by bidding up a selected assortment of oils, public utilities and specialties to new high ground, but they were forcod to contend with persistant liquidation in other sections of the list, which carried a long line of issues down 1 to 5 points. Total crossed the 4,000,000 share mark for the seventh consecutive full session, with the ticker 50 minutes behind the market in the early afternoon.

Tightening of margin requirements by several leading commission houses, following the marking down of the loaning value of stocks by banks, undoubtedly was an important factor in the days selling movement. One of the largest houses in the street raised the margin on some of the highly specula-tive issues from 25 to between 33 1-3 and 50 per cent of the market price. The credit situation was again an important topic of discussion in brokerage and banking circles, with talk of higher Federal reserve rediscount rates causing further uneasiness Hi speculative quarters. Apart from higher margins and the possibility of higher money, however, there was a rather general belief that the market was entitled to at least a technical reaction after the recent violent advance in many issues. Unconfirmed rumors that several pools also were getting out from under, also tended to create bearish sentiment.

Twenty or more oil issues were pushed up to' new high levels in a series of bullish demonstrations during the blocks of 5000 to 30.000 shares be ng quite common. In some quarters this was regarded as an effort to bring the petroleum shares into line with the rest of the market, in anticipation of steadily increasing consumption, and in others as a "smoke screen" to cover liquidation in other stocks which have been widely exploited. New high prices for the year, or longer, were regitered by Standard Oils of California. New York and New Jersey, Texas Corporatoin, the Pan American issues. Lago.

California Petroleum. Maryland, and Riehiield Oil of California, but many of the gains were reduced cr wiped out. Public Utilities also presented several points of strength.
