The bill, supported by the state's district attorneys, would amend Pennsylvania law to create several new offense including conspiracy to sell drugs and operation of a continuing drug-dealing enterprise, which would carry a minimum 10-year jail sentence. The proposal passed 47-0, but only after Senate Minority Leader Edward Zemprelli, D-AUegheny, accused the Republican majority of putting it up for a vote to help the re-election effort of GOP Attorney General LeRoy Zimmerman. The legislation was sent to the House for its consideration.

HARRISBURG The state Senate on Wednesday unanimously passed legislation designed to crack down on drug dealers, although a leading Democrat that the timing of its passage was politically motivated. The bill would allow prosecutors to keep property of drug dealers, from cash and cars to yachts and houses, if it can be shown the prop-erty was bought with money from drug deals. give Republican lawmakers too much credit for bills passed by the Democratic-controlled General Assembly. "We certainly don't expect to hear the governor being less than candid in his remarks and involved in a distortion of the facts," House Speaker Orlando J. "When you suggest that it was Republican legislators alone who brought the tax cut to Delawareans, or Republicaps alone who were responsible for the blue-collar jobs bill, we must pause to ask you a question how can you make such claims? Republican legislators didn't have enough votes in the 132nd General Assembly to pass anything by themselves, let alone a tax cut." But state Republican Chairman Jerome 0. Herlihy says the Demo- crats' complaints are "patently ridiculous." He says the ads are fair because the Republicans pushed the Democrats into cutting taxes and that the Democrats stole the idea for a blue-collar jobs bill from a Republican legislator.
