Such valor was exemplified by Navy Corps man John P. Loftus of Wilmington, serving with the 5th Marine Division, who received a Bronze Star for using his own body to shield a wounded Marine from, shell fire. Loftus was twice wounded in the campaign. Cpl. James W.

Mumford of Selby-ville. a 4th Division machine gunner who braved "intense enemy machine gun and rifle fire to go out and bring back a wounded comrade, also received the Bronze Star. The Bronze Star was awarded posthumously to Pfc. Robert Dur-nan of Faulkland Road near Wilmington, a member of Company, 24th Regiment. 4th Marine Division.

Others who were killed in the Iwo Jima action included: Sgt. Russell Keen Jr. of Wilming ton, Pfc Lewis E. Simmons of Elm-hurst (H Company. 27th Regiment, 5th Marine Division); Pvt Ralph 0.

Patterson of Dover, a member of the 4th Marine Division; Pfc. Peter Jurski of Wilmington. 9th Regiment. 3rd Marine Division; Pvts. William Veasey Charles E.

Young Jr and Wallace R. West all of Wilmington and the 4th Marine Division; Pvt. Jerome J. Cichocki of Wilmington and Pfc. Julian A.

Courtney ol Magnolia, a member of the 3rd Marine Division Navy Coxs Charles F. Masden of Minquadale and Seaman John T. Hetzler and Signalman 3rd Class Robert C. Miller, both of Wilmington, all served in the fleet at Iwo and were killed later in the war. Others who took part in the campaign included Lieutenants Robert Bishop, a University of Delaware graduate, and a Howell Chicker- mg.

both of Wilmington; Lt Joseph Latchum of Milford. aboard the destroyer Irwin; Yeoman 3rd Class Willard Paul Fisher aboard the battleship Wisconsin. Coxswain William Eugene McGow-man and Yeoman 2nd Class Edward C. Cichocki. both of Wilmington, aboard the battleship Massachusetts.
