In a letter of condolence to Mrs. Horowitz, composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein called the temperamental pianist "this amazing man." "He was not only a super pianist, but a super musician with all the mortal fallibilities such geniuses have," Bernstein wrote. Often hailed as one of the greatest concert pianists, Horowitz emigrated from Russia in 1928 and played his first American concert seven days later. Horowitz was the model for a generation of pianists and the highest-paid classical pianist in the world. By 1978, he was called a "national treasure" by President Carter.

Horowitz, whose sartorial trademark was a sporty bow tie, Was known for his intense, electric performances, his technique and skill, his rich interpretations, speed and a power described as "controlled thunder." His style of playing and choice of repertoire led him to be dubbed the last great Romantic pianist. He himself called playing the piano as "the coordination of mind, heart and finger," with emotion the key. "The brain is the control of emotion; there has to be something to be controlled. The heart is the guide, the brain is the control; what comes out had to have both," he once said. The drama which ruled his performances also guided his career, which he often interrupted for long periods the first time from 1936 to 1939, following an illness, CHARLES M.

He continued to make records during the second retirement, happy to be away from the wearying pace of the concert circuit. He also served as mentor to five concert pianists. Horowitz forbade his students to say they were studying under him. He would often cancel lessons and normally taught while stretched on his living room couch. His students also said the pianist was unable to transmit the secret of his techniques.

The "demon inside me" that urged him to do better, and a desire to perform in public again, brought him back to the concert stage when he was 61. The pianist was born Vladimir Gorowicz on Oct. 1, 1904, on Kiev's Music Horowitz was given piano lessons when he was 6 and made moderate progress until age 9, when he stunned his parents by learning all the Rachmaninoff pieces in the family library and all the piano scores of Wagner's operas. He made his concert debut at age 19, seeking a way to earn money for his family. Horowitz preferred to perform on Sunday afternoons, and rarely practiced more than two hours a day.

"I have practiced enough in my life he said. "The most important thing is the spirit." Neighbors became used to seeing him strolling near Central Park. Those walks were once recommended by his idol and early discoverer, Rachmaninoff. The Russian master, Horowitz said, once told him: "If you don't walk, your fingers will not run."
