I spoke to several brokers. The more we talked and the more I read, the more confused I became. Every broker seems to, have a deferent favorite mutual fund. Finally, I invested $2,000 In shares of a fund In May and another $500 in the same fund In My investment has performed fairly good, so far. I hope to make another vestment soon.

Would you advise me to buy more shares of the same fund or to start Investing in a different one. A. At least for the next investment or two, I would advise you stick with the same fund. Give your investment a chance to percolate. Your investment aim, obviously, is growth in value.

We have to assume that you picked a mutual fund which a tries for growth and which has a record of achieving its aim. I'm sure you don't expect instant miracles from your investment. Your letter shows you to be a sensible and conservative man with your money. (No, girls, I won't -give you his address.) The argument over whether it is better to invent in only one mutual fund or in several is an old one. It will never be settled to everyone's satisfaction.

One fund may perform best one year; another the next year. No one mutual fund stays at the top of the performance heap year after year. As long as you are not dissatisfied with the one in which you own shares, I can see no real reason to look elsewhere. good and choice good 24.00-25.00; standard and low pood 21.50-24.00; utility and commercial bulls 18.00-21.00. I own some stock of a large electric utility company. I believe this is a sensible and conservative i which should grow in value and dividends (as it has in the past) to offset the declining purchasing power of the dollar resulting from inflation. Nonetheless, I worry. Suppose we have another great depression, as we did in the 1930s. Would my Investment become worthless? A.

I don't know. I doubt it. But I just don't know. Some stocks did lose all their value during the great depression. All stocks fell in value.

Most have long since recovered. I don't see any depression on the economic horizon, But I don't go along with the theory advanced by the "new thinkers" that it can never happen again. If it does happen, corporate profits will fall and so will stock prices. However, utilities, by the very nature of thsir business, should stand up than most businesses. I hear radio and television announcers saying that such-and-such a stock was up, or down, so many "points." I would like to get into the stock market but don't know what a point means.

What is a point? A. If you need basic information such as this, you had better go to the library first and get sonre books to study up on the stock market. In individual stocks, a point is one dollar. (Mr. Doyle will answer only representative letters of eral interest in his column.
