The Tigers, favored to win the state title last season, were dumped 68-66 by Holland in the district finals last season. Coach Don Farnum has only one starter back from last year's team, 61" senior Mike Pollard. Pollard played guard last season but has been moved to center because of his experience and mobility But Farnum admits Pollard "may have a problem holding a big fellow" on defense Heir apparent to graduated Alex McNutt, now at Bradley Unvensty, is 6'2" L. C. Bowen, a C'2" junior.

Bowen has scored 25 points in each of Benton Harbor's two wins. Most of Bowen's points have been close in shots. Senior Tony Ashman, who lettered last season, is the other forward while the guards are 5'7" juniors Dave Mack and John Rudley. The Tigers equalled a school scoring record with a 97-61 win over Muskegon Mona Shores in the opener and defeated Muskegon Heights, 79-72 last Friday Benton Harbor was leading by 14 points late in the game but slipped and led by only three points in the closing seconds Four straight free shots gave the Tigers the seven point win. A A I (UPD --Michigan State, which hasn't had a winning basketball team since its Big Ten championship crew of 1958-59, has started the current season like it means business. The sparkling Spartans are averaging 104 3 points a game after rolling up scores of 109-86, 101-100 and 104-81 against Northern Michigan, Western Michigan and Bowling Green respectively. But Coach Forddy Anderson, who is cautiously optimistic, said he won't know for sure how good his team is until after a series of road games that begin Saturday at Pennsylvania.

"We haven't been really and truly tested yet, but this road jtnp will give us a good shake," Anderson said. Before the Spartans play at home again they'll have played seven opponents on the road. On the plus side Anderson observed, "We've been doing a pretty good job against what I I think are three representative teams According to Anderson the difference between this season's i team and the 1962-63 club that won only 4 of 20 games "is a little more maturity, a good nucleus of veterans and a good performance by a couple of sophomores "We've got better speed this year and I think we've got our I fast break going again. At this i early date we're progressing very well," Anderson said. i i The most surprising veteran 1 on the team is center Fred I Thomann.

a 6-9 center from Taylor, Mich In his first two seasons Thomann lacked the fines.se needed to make him a pivot threat but this year he's rebounded excellently and is scoring at a healthy 19 point a game clip. Thomann is second in scoring only -to captain Pete Gent, who after a 34-point outburst against Bowling Green, is averaging 24.3. Sophomore Stan Washington, a 6-3 forward who rebounds with the effectiveness of someone 6 inches taller, is averaging 16.6 points. The Spartans' other two starters, junior Marcus Sanders and senior Bill Schwarz, lend further balance to the attack with averages of 14.3 and 10.6 points respectively. Backing up the first five are solid replacements in senior Bill Berry (8.6 points) and sophomore Bill Curtis (4.3 points).
