I WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1963 THE HOLLAND, MICHIGAN, EVENING SENTINEL PAGE THREE Mrs. Curtis Opens Home For Questers Yule Party The Christmas party of the Etta Fox Chapter of Questers was held Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Stanley Curtis. The home was gaily decorated with Christmas arrangements made by the hostess. The theme of the was program "Christmas in Other Lands." Miss Flora Skow told about "Christmas in Denmark." Instead of Santa, the Danish people have the legends of the dwarf, using both heathen and Christian customs.

Hans Christian Anderson in his books tells about the Christmas trees decorated with flags and little heart baskets for candies. The tree is the guest in every home and was introduced in Europe by the Danes. Denmark is the home of the originai Christmas Seals. Mrs. Curtis told about the Dutch Christmas, St.

Day, which Nicholas is lived celebrated in the Dec. 4th century and is remembered for his charitable works and was called the "Miracle Worker." Dutch boys and girls place their wooden shoes in front of the fireplace and St Nicholas: fills the shoes of good boys and girls with good gifts, while his helper called Black Pete leaves a switch for the bad children. Dec. 25 is celebrated with ser-1 enity and dignity. Mrs.

Henry Engelsman told about English Christmas All the church bells peal out on Christmas Eve. The are decorated with mistletoe, holly, evergreens and a Christmas tree. Every church has choir services when the traditional carols are sung. The day after Christmas is called Christmas Box Day. when gifts are presented to the poor Scotland celebrates New Year more gaily than Christmas when everyone drinks to the health of friends Mrs.

Hardy Holmen displayed her beautiful collection of Dan-! ish porcelain In 1895 the Danes started the custom of making a newly designed plate each year, to commemorate historic events It resulted from the Danish custom of presenting the hired help with a plate of sweets on Christmas The plates are a lovely cobalt blue These plates are made for one year and then the pattern IS destroyed In 1898 they started making year-! ly commemorative spoons with sterling base and enameled design. Maentz Named Service League President Mrs. Willis A. Diekema was hostess to the Tuesday Service League of the Holland Hospital Auxiliary at a Christmas luncheon and party on Tuesday. At the brief business meeting, Mrs. Henry Maentz was elected president; Mrs.

H. P. Harms, treasurer; Mrs. Stuart Boyd, secretary and Mrs. David Boyd, representative on the Auxiliary board.

Year-end reports included the presentation of a diathermy machine to the hospital and the completion of 200 dressings for the hospital. Theta Alpha Chapter Holds Couples Party Theta Alpha chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority held a couples bowling party at Northland Lanes Saturday night.

Following the bowling. the group went to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Disser. 755 Myrtle for refreshments and a social hour.
