The school gave Brandon Hopkins the 30th annual Kerr Award, which this year was worth $29,300. Hopkins submitted a novel and several critical essays to the Sophie Kerr Committee, made up of the college president and the entire English Department faculty.

New Jersey Shooting victim ready to go home EAST ORANGE Nearly three months after being shot in the head during a gunman's rampage atop the Empire State Building, Matthew Gross almost is ready to go home. The 28-year-old musician may be released from the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in East Orange as early as this week. Gross was the most seriously wounded victim of the Feb. 23 attack in which a fellow band member was killed. Five others were hit when Ali Hassan Abu Kama opened fire on the 86th-floor observation deck.

The 69-year-old Palestinian teacher then shot himself to death after killing Chris Burmeister, 27, a Danish guitarist in Gross' rock band, The Bushpilots. A WILMAPCO study recommended better customer information systems, expansion of shelters and park-and-ride programs, among other suggestions. Newspapers set to merge in early June The Delaware State News in Dover and the Daily Whale in Lewes will merge June 2. The two downstate newspapers combined their weekend editions last fall after being purchased by Independent Newspapers Inc.
