FRIDAY, AUGUST 25, 1961 THE HOLLAND, MICHIGAN, EVENING SENTINEL PAGE NINE Women's Suffrage Granted On Nearly World-Wide Basis NEW YORK (UPD--New Zea land was the. first nation to grant suffrage to women 68 years ago In the intervening decades, suffrage has made such gains globally that today only 10 countries restrict women's vote or right to hold office. The United Nations Commission on the status of Women has released its 16th annual report an suffrage worldwide, showing that since its last study, 21 countries, most fthem newly independent, have extended suffrage to women. The commission said that since 1945, when the. U.N.

charter was formed, 65 countries have "confirmed, granted or extended full or limited political rights to women." About half, the commission explained, already had taken some action on women's suffrage prior to adoption of the charter. The latest country to give suffrage to women is Paraguay, whose government on July 5, 1961, declared that "women shall have the same political rights and obligations as men Now, every nation in the West- "SHOP OUT AWAYS AND SEE HOW IT PAYS" MAYTAG open Fri. One of these, Brazil, make voting compulsory for women i they are in "gainful occuaptions The 92 include Russia and othe. Iron Curtain countries, at las five of which granted suffrag before women won it in the United States 41 years ago. The 10 countries where there is no national women's suffrage am where women are not eligible for elective office are Afghanistan Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Lieht enstem, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia Yeman and Switzerland. In Yemen and Saudi Arabia neither sex has electoral rights In Nigeria, women may vote anc hold office in the eastern anc western regions In the northern Cameroons, which now is a pro vince of the northern region oi Nigeria, women voted during a plebiscite held in 1961 under U.N auspices. Swiss women are not permittee vote in federal elections or be elected to federal office.

But three ntons (states) permit them to vote and hold office. And they may vote and hold office in some municipalities Pioneers of women's suffrage on a national level were New lealand, Australia, other British- colonized countries, and some of Scandinavian nations But Wyoming was ahead even of these--it was still a territory 1869 when it gave women the BUSY? stated "the rights of citizens to vote shall not be denied abridged by the United States by any state on account of sex Dog Notes By Peter Boggs St. Vitus's Dance Millions of American childien have had measles and have come out of the ordeal none the worse for it Yet when measles occurs among the natives of some of the South Sea Islands (where it is relatively unknown and thus no im munity has been set up) most of its victims die So, it is the same with humans and with dogs, as regards chorea, the malady known often as "St Vitus's Dance" Many thousands of American children contract St. Vitus's Dance which makes their muscles twitch The right 'food, the right medi cine, the right all-around treat ment cures them But let a dog get St. Vitus's Dance and there is almost no chance for recovery It is perhaps one of the deadliest of all canine ailments Here is the pattern, and be on the lookout for it Your young dog gets distempei Sometimes, through wise 24-hour-a- day nursing, he will seem to recover. Then, too often his muscles will begin to twitch and his teeth to chatter.

He has contracted dis temper's worst sequel, namely chorea. Send at once for the ery best ve: you can find, put the case in his hands and obey his orders Even then, the chance for recovery is very slight But the chances at greater today than even ten yeais ago, thanks to new medicines. BRING 'EM BACK Presented in the pnblic interest by AUTOMOBILE CLUB OF MICHIGAN Color Blind I have always doubted the scientific theory that dogs are colorblind and that they see all the world as black-and-white-and-giay like a photograph. I believe that dogs can tell one color from an other as readily as you or I Sim pie experiments of my own have led to this belief, though some people don't agree with me. And here is one more of many instances which seem to prove I am correct According to Mrs F.

Remont of Los Angeles, her dachshund, Mitzi, had a very keen sense color For instance, the dog would not willingly ride in any cab whicn was not yellow She backed away in disgust from vehicles of any other hue and was especially repelled by. the sight of a red cab Mrs. Remont carried the tests still further She gave Mitzi several toy balloons, most of them yellow The dachshund played gaily wih all of them Then a red balloon was added to the collection Mitzi backed away from it, as if terrified Nothing would induce net- to touch it or to go near it To me that is pretty conclus've proof that all dogs do not see the world as if it were of a photograph.
