PAGE TWO THE HOLLAND, MICHIGAN, EVENING SENTINEL Investor's Guide By Sam Shulsky Q. I am interested in buying Consolidated Edison and-or Texas Utilities for long-term Investment. Are they longtime dividend payers? Which would you suggest? A. I am generally reluctant to discuss individual stocks in this column and, of course, must refuse to play "expert" on their investment potential. (Also -since both stocks are good quality, I have no fear that their names in print will lead to misuse by stock touts). Consolidated Edison, of course, is one of the oldest utilities in the country. It has paid a dividend without interruption since 1885! In recent years it has been a most generous dividend $1.80, which, at a current stock price of around 25 works out to a yield of 7.2 per cent. You won't find many commons yielding that much.

I am sure several columns could be written explaining that high yield in a stock which hasn't missed a dividend for 87 years, but after mentioning the general concern over the many problems facing New York City I suppose the simplest course would be to point out that though the company has been able to maintain a generally rising dividend, earnings have not been as exciting as one could hope for. The company earned $2.21 a share in 1962; in the five years previous to the current year, earnings ran $2.58, $2.57, $2.68, $2.30 and $2.35. The company's stock is rated A minus. Texas Utilities common is rated A plus. The company is located in what is generally believed to be a faster growing section of the country and, in fact, its earning bear that out: 92 cents a share in 1962 in the last 5 years, $1.32, $1.67 and $1.75.

You don't have to be a financial analyst to discern a different pattern in earnings as well as in dividends. (In the last 10 years. Con. Ed's dividend went from $1.50 to $1.80 and Texas Utilities from 55 cents to $1. The result of a this: Con.

Edison investors are getting a 7.2 per cent return on their investment while Texas Utilities stock buyers are willing to take a yield of only 3V. per cent. I've tried to answer some of your questions. But can't discuss which would be more attractive you, since you don't tell me whether you want maximum income now or are willing to give up some current income in return for hope of growth in future. Con.

Edison is now selling for about half its 1965 high price, whereas Texas Utilities is within a couple points of its all-time high. You alone can decide knowing your needs which vehicle best suits you. Q. I'm two years from retirement. My broker suggested I buy shares of a comparatively new mutual fund, claiming the expected yield the first year would be per cent and thereafter 8 per cent, plus capital gains.

A. If the fund is so new (and so small that I can find no mention of it) how can he predict what it will earn and how TV SCHEDULE JULY 3 MONDAY WOTV (8) Eastern Standard WKZO (3) Eastern Standard Time WZZM-TV (13) Eastern Standard Time 5:00 Mike Douglas 5:30 Mike Douglas 6:00 News 6:30 NBC News 7:00 Baseball Pre-game 7:15 Baseball 10:00 It Takes A Thief 11:00 News-Weather-Spts 11:30 Johnny Carson 5:00 Star Trek 5:30 Big Valley 6:30 CBS News 7:00 News-Weath-Spts 7:30 Death Valley 8:00 Gunsmoke 9:00 Here's Lucy 9:30 Doris Day 10:00 Salute to Oscar 11:00 News-Weath-Spts 11:30 Movie--Comedy 5:00 Laredo 5:30 News-Weath-Spts 6:00 ABC News 6:30 NYPD 7:00 Truth or Conse. 7:30 This Is Your Life 8:00 Movie--Drama 10:00 -News Inquiry 11:00 News-Weath-Spts 11:30 Movie--Western WUHQ-TV (41) Eastern Standard Time 5:00 Bottom of Sea 6:00 Evening News 6:30 UNCLE 7:30 Fishin' Hole 8:00 Movie 10:00 People Puzzle 11:00 Untouchables 4:00 Lucy 4:30 The Flintstpnes 5:05 News 5:30 Flipper 6:00 Dick Van Dyke WGN-TV (9) Central Standard Time 10:30 WGN Presents 6:30 Movie 7:30 Movie 8:00 Hitchcock 8:30 Dragnet 9:00 Perry Mason 10:00 News 12:25 Late News 12:55 Late Movie 2:30 News 2:40 Five Minutes DOWNTOWN STANDARD Free Pick Up and Delivery 8th Columbia Stamps SERVICE Ph. 396-4688 TV SCHEDULE JULY 4 TUESDAY WOTV (8) Eastern Standard time 6:30 TJ of Presents 7:00 Today 9:00 Dinah Shore 9:30 Concentration 10:00 Sale of Century 10:30 Hollywood Squares 11:00 Jeopardy 11:30 Buck Matthews 12:00 Bill Cosby 12:30 News 1:00 Our Lives 1:30 Doctors 2:00 Another World 2:30 Peyton Place 3:00 Lost in Space 4:00 Bugs Bunny 4:30 Jeannie 5:00 Mike Douglas 6:00 News 6:30 News 7:00 NBC News 7:30 Ponderosa 8:30 Action Playhouse 9:30 Stars and Stripes 10:30 Second Look 11:00 News-Weather-Spts 11:30 Johnny Carson WKZO-TV(3) Eastern Standard 6:30 Sunrise Semes. 7:00 CBS News 8:00 Capt.

Q. We are elderly, retired, living comfortably on railroad retirement and Social Security. We have $6 000 in mutual funds and $10,000 in savings. Our family is raised, doing well and can be counted on if help is needed.

Should we continue to save, buy bonds, or spend A. It may come as a surprise to the new crop of wage earners that their parents find it almost as difficult to spend as for their children to save. But the fact remains that the older generation will never completely forget the Great Depression. Willy-nilly this traumatic experience has influenced their financial moves ever since. Since you are comfortable on your income and have a cushion not only in mutual funds and cash but in a supportive family I'd say spend, spend and enjoy, enjoy.

Western Europe is doing it too, the Agriculture Department said today. Faced with rapidly rising cattle and beef prices because production is down 4 to 6 per cent, the European Common Market June 5 suspended its 16 per cent import duty on live cattle and the 20 per cent tariff on fresh and frozen beef.

Processed meats were not affected by the suspension, scheduled to last until Sept. 15 if average European market prices remain 13 per cent or more above the or support level; and if prices in each Common Market member country remain at least 9 per cent above the "orientation" rate.
