WEDNESDAY, JUNE 14, THE HOLLAND, MICHIGAN, EVENING SENTINEL Chrysler Wants Redstone As Trainer for Space Age DIOTR01T I i The govern meat space agency is being asked to make the old reliable Redstone rocket the T33 trainer of the space age. Chrysler Corp. wants the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to use the Redstone as a trainer for future astronauts much as the is used to train present-day jet pilots. What Chrysler has in mind is a continuous series of sub-orbital training shots such as the one made by astronaut Alan B. Shepard May Shepard rode a Chrysler-built Redstone 300 miles down the Atlantic missile, range, reaching an altitude of 115 miles in his historic flight.

The other six men in the Mercury space program will take similar flights later. But no plans have been announced for training a more a the seven men now in the Mercury program. And NASA now has enough Redstones to complete the planned flights. Chrysler has been building the Redstones at a plant in suburban Sterling Township. The company's bid to extend the Redstone space flights apparently is a last-ditch effort to keep the plant open.

The plant once had 13.0(10 em- ployes turning out Redstone and Jupiter missiles fur the Army. But now the war rockets are obsolete and only 2,400 men are left to make replacement parts and modernize missiles still in the field. The Army-owned plant is issued space contracts through the government's Detroit Ordinance District. A spokesman said the plant was supposed to end replacement production this month but it now appeared work would continue well into the fall, A permanent astronaut training program i Redstones would keep the plant's production lines humming. But it would be expensive, with each shot costing more than $1 million.

In quantity production the missiles would cost with a like amount for the guidance system. The capsule itself, which would run into the be recovered but the missile would be lost. Chrysler proposed that instead of firing the missile over water from Cape Canaveral, the flight be made over land from the White Sands, N.M., proving ground. This would simplify recovery operations. The shot would be re-pro- rammed for an altitude of 200 miles and a distance of 120 miles.
