TUESDAY, MAY 28, 1963 THE HOLLAND, MICHIGAN, EVENING SENTINEL PAGE FIVE Probe Theft Of Small Lake PONTIAC (UPD--There is nothing on the books about stealing a lake and it will be up to an Oakland County Circuit judge today to decide what to do about it. The people of Williams Lake wanted to "borrow" a little water from the people of Maceday Lake Friday night and a group of Williams people were discovered, armed with shovels, and jackhammers digging a trench between the two bodies of water. One man with a jackhammer was about to do away the concrete plug in the culvert under Williams Lake Road when someone from Maceday Lake stopped him. To get the water back into Maceday Lake, it would have to flow up a two foot grade. The culvert has been plugged for about 15 years on the complaint from, a Williams Lake resident that the water level was too high.

Friday was a different story however, as the Williams Lake people descended to the digging spot. One man said, "We don't want lo steal the water, but it seems kind of unfair that theirs (Maceday Lake) is fed by a river and ours stagnates in the summertime." The Williams group planned to seek a court order to unplug the culvert. County Dr a i Commissioner, Daniel Barry who was summoned to the digging operations, placated both sides and persuaded them to take the matter to court. Rites Set for Bandleader PALM DESERT. Calif.

Supreme Court Rules in Case WASHINGTON (UPD--Negroes fighting city- and state-imposed racial barriers today had some powerful support--loud and clear --from the highest court in the land. The Supreme Court's voice obviously was intended for school boards and all local governing bodies, as well as lower federal courts before which integration cases are heard. The message was this: Individual rights guaranteed by the Constitution are not pie in the sky. A person is entitled to enjoy them today, not at some vague time in the future.

"The basic guarantees of our Constitution are warrants for the here and now and, 'unless there is an overwhelmingly compelling reason, they are to be promptly fulfilled," the court said.
