FRIDAY, MAY 24, 1963 Battle Creek Is Much More Than the Corn Flake Center THE HOLLAND, MICHIGAN, EVENING SENTINEL PAGE FIVE BATTLE CREEK (UPD-Cereal capital of the world. That's Battle Creek, a thriving city of 48,774 in South-Central Michigan at the junction of the Kalamazoo and a Creek Rivers. With the exception of Detroit, possibly no other Michigan city is wider known throughout the nation thanks to the corn flake. In millions of American homes each morning, the breakfast food set out on the table wears the tag a product of Battle Creek, Mich. The Kellogg Co.

and Post Division of a Foods makers of breakfast cereals, are two of Battle Creek's biggest employers. But, the city has three other firms Clark Equipment Eaton Mfg. and Carton Container Division--which also employ more than 1,000 persons. It has five firms that employ between 100 and 1,000 and scores of employers that create jobs for up to 100 workers. Battle Creek's factories produce such items as forklift trucks, packaging machinery, paper and box-board, welded wire and steel products, printing inks, pumps and compressors, fire apparatus, a stampsings, automotive valves, heating and air conditioning registers and, of cereal.

The fight that gave Battle Creek its name wasn't really much of a struction program. That includes six buildings which will house classrooms, administration, library, auditorium, student activities and science. The city has not neglected cultural and recreational facilities. Bailey Park and Binder Park each run over 600 acres and have facilities for baseball, tennis, shuffleboard, horseshoes, picnicking, a zoo and even overnight camping accomodations. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary is located northwest of the city and within the city limits are a Leila Arboretum, Kingman Museum, Post Art Gallery, a Creek Civic Art Center and, outside the city, Willard Beach.

Haitian Police Seek Bombers PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti (UPI) --Haitian police stepped up their efforts today to track down fugitive terrorist leader Clement Barbot, suspected of directing the latest bombings against Francois Duvalier's government. A growing financial complex is developing in the heart of the city. The Channing Corp with 800 employees, is located this center. A total of 1,200 federal employes are now housed in the Federal Center, the headquarters of the Defense Logistic Services Center, headquarters of the Sixth S.

Army Region IV and the Staff College of the Office of Civil Defense. Conventions have become a big business in Battle Creek. a year, an estimated 200,000 conventioneers and sightseers nearly $3 million in the vicinity. Battle Creek is especially proud of its Kellogg Community College.
