B8 WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 23, 2000 VC LOS ANGELES TIMES Obituaries Joan Marsh; '30s Bombshell Began in Silents 1 i I ll when she was helping develop cultural understanding and cooperation here. "There's the Japanese community, the Korean community, the Chinese community With her talent for organizing those various cultures, Lee developed a 40-member board of corporate and professional Filipino, Chinese, Japanese and Korean leaders to assist the Southern California Asian Pacific American Legal Center, whose council she headed. Among many business directorships, she was serving on the board of Bank Plus parent of Fidelity Federal Bank. Despite her own limited education, Lee was highly respected for graduating from "hard-knocks" schools of personal experience, and was named to leading roles in top educational institutions. She headed a research project, "California's American Chinese," for Claremont McKenna College's Rose Institute of State and Local Government and was vice chairman of the institute's board.

She was on the boards of visitors for the UCLA School of Medicine and Southwestern University School of Law, a regent of Loyola Marymount University and on the board of the private Webb School. Lee was also the founder of Cal State L.A.'s Chinese American Women's Scholarship Fund. Her son said that among Lee's myriad awards, his mother most treasured her honorary "doctor of philanthropy" degree from Golden Gate University. The businesswoman is survived by her two sons, Randal and Craig Lee, both of whom joined her in her business, and three grandchildren. The family has asked that memorial donations be made to the Lilly Lee Charitable Foundation at Lilly Enterprises 4727 Wilshire Suite 612, Los Angeles, CA 90010.

the smallest feet in Hollywood-wearing a size 2AAA, the smallest shoes in Paramount's vast wardrobe department of the 1930s. She was the poster girl in "All Quiet on the Western Front," the character Beanie in "Tailor Made Man," Honey in "Are You Toots in "It's Great to Be Alive," Cuddles in "Life Begins in College," Joan in "Charlie Chan on Broadway" and Dimples in "Road to Zanzibar." Married to and divorced from screenwriter Charles Belden, Marsh largely retired from the screen after her marriage to John D.W. Morrill in late 1943. Her last film was 1944's "Follow the Leader." In more recent years, the actress' memorable images were included in archival film footage of the 1974 retrospective "That's Entertainment!" Marsh for many years owned and operated a successful stationery business in Los Angeles, Paper Unlimited. She is survived by her sons, Langdon Morrill, of Solana Beach, and Jonathan Morrill, of Las Vegas.

By MYRNA OLIVER TIMHS STAFF WRITER Joan Marsh, a child actress in Mary Pickford's silent films who returned to the screen as a fully grown blond bombshell in light romantic comedies of the 1930s and 1940s, has died. She was 86. Marsh died Aug. 10 in her home near Ojai. Private services were conducted in Santa Barbara.

Born Nancy Ann Rosher in Por-terville, she was the daughter of a favorite Pickford cinema-tographer, Charles Rosher. Promoted by her dad, little Dorothy Rosher, as she was billed, moved easily into child roles in several of Pickford's silents. The little girl appeared in such Pick-ford favorites as "The Little Princess" in 1917, "Daddy Long Legs" in 1919 and the 1920 version of "Pollyanna." Unlike many of her contemporaries, little Dorothy had what The Times described in 1929 as "an extraordinary speaking and singing voice." While many celluloid entertainers were forced to turn to other careers, she easily landed a contract with Universal for "talking pictures." LEE: Businesswoman, Philanthropist Was 70 Continued from B7 roads to the herb shop run first by her grandfather and then by her father. Educated only in secretarial skills, she became a dutiful homemaker and mother, bringing up her two sons, for 16 years. With the thought of helping to pay family expenses, if necessary, after her husband's anticipated early retirement, she obtained a real estate license.

But the life plan changed. Her husband divorced her, leaving her with the boys, a mortgage, a car loan and no alimony. So she went to work. Boldly establishing herself in Beverly Hills, Lee at first sold houses, then graduated to apartment buildings. By the late 1970s she began syndicating large land deals involving downtown Los Angeles property sold to Hong Kong millionaires.

Lilly Lee gravitated to big-bucks Chinese investors for the same reason she agreed to head the board of governors of the Chinatown Public Safety which worked to establish a Chinatown police station, better housing and cultural and recreation facilities because Chinese of all economic levels were "family." Years before American businessmen began making today's current inroads in markets and manufacturing in China, Lee worked to foster improved business and-charitable understanding between Americans and Asians. As part of that effort, she completed a "Pacific Rim Profiles and Technical Report" to provide information for business, government and human services organizations about the changing demographics of Asian Pacific communities. That database has been helpful in marketing, political activities and in providing social services. Lee served on the executive board of the Greater Los Angeles World Trade as a director of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce and as president of its Women's Council. And she was on the board of the American Red Cross and of United Way heading its Asian Pacific Research and Development Council.

She encouraged two-way charity both more grants to Asian assistance organizations and more solicitation of contributions from Asian businesses. "The lesson to be learned is, there's no such thing as the Asian community," Lee told The Times in 1986 Joan Marsh, here in 1937, began her career as a child actress. Dorothy Rosher changed her name to Joan Marsh and took her place as leads and second leads in about three dozen light and better pictures. All grown up with platinum hair, the young beauty was frequently compared with screen star Jean Harlow. Weighing only 95 pounds, Marsh was said to have the Oscar ceremonies.

"I made him take Polaroids of me in two dresses to see which one I looked the thinnest in," she said. "Herb was stunned that I wasn't ready but I had to look at these Polaroids." Brenner taught at USC for several years. On Saturday in Los Angeles of cardiac failure. Abulfaz Elchlbey; Deposed Azerbaijani Leader Abulfaz Elchibey, 62, first president of Azerbaijan after the breakup of the Soviet Union. His tenure lasted a year.

Elchibey, a nationalist academic, Herbert Brenner; Actors' Agent, Executive Herbert Brenner, 86, a Hollywood agent and executive who promoted the careers of such entertainers as Shelley Winters and Robert Taylor. Brenner was a vice president of MCA and later became president of General Artists Corp. During his lengthy career as an agent, he also worked with directors Mervyn LeRoy and Raoul Walsh. Winters, who won an Academy Award in 1960 for "The Diary of Anne Frank," recently recalled for People magazine that she upset Brenner when he arrived to pick her up for campaigned against Soviet rule of the oil-rich Caucasian republic, and had spent 18 months in prison for anti-Soviet activities. He officially became president of independent Azerbaijan in 1992.

He was overthrown in 1993 in a military coup that led to present President Geidar Aliev's coming to power. During Elchibey's presidency, Azerbaijan was defeated in a war with Armenia over the disputed, mainly Armenian enclave -of Nargorno-Karabakh. After his ouster, Elchibey returned to his home province of Nakhichevan and became chairman of the main opposition group, the Azerbaijani Popular Front.
