PAGE SK THE HOLLAND, MICHIGAN, EVENING SENTINEL TUESDAY, MARCH 12, 1963 Interesting Data Found in Cornerstone GRAND HAVEN There was plenty of excitement al the Board of Education office here Monday when the old cornerstone of Central Elementary school, destroyed by fire Jan. 28 in a $500,000 was opened by Supt. R. M. Van Volkinburg.

The opening of the copper box stirred old timers' memories here and brought out the irony of the fire-piaqued school. Little did city officials realize when the cornerstone was laid Nov. 14, 1901, that this community would go through another fire in 1963. The old brick building that burned earlier in 1901 was replaced by the building that is now only a pile of junk at Franklin a Sixth Sts. Central School first burned March 5, 1901 A letter from Mayor Joe O'Brien was in the box and other treasures in the box within the stone included several articles, not as well preserved.

A picture of the former school was barely recognizable and a booklet listing the school calendar was so rotten and soft it turned to powder on touch. An oval photo on cardboard was totally disintegrated but a school letterhead signed by board members was fairly legible. E. P. Cummings was head of the schools in 1901 and Supt A.

G. Hardy had the post when the original school went up in 1870. There was also a list of city officials and several copies of Grand Haven and Grand Rapids newspapers. OR. KILDARE by I THOUGHT TALK TO YOU BLAIR HOSPITAL HERE'S THE TOTAL.
