Holland Area Economic Conditions Holland is all important trading manufacturing and tourist center of 25 000 The pcicapita effective buying income (purchasing power for the city was $1,955 in 1961 This is almost identical with the aver age per capita figure for Michigan as a whole. yet only eight Michi gan counties had a higher per purchasing power than did Holland It 15 significant that the eight counties that exceeded Hol land contained Michigan's eight largest metropolitan areas The population of Holland and the four surrounding townships totalled 41,332 In This was a 311 per cent increase over the 1950 Holland area population The Holland area 16 growing more rapidly than the two counties of which it is a part 1290 per cent or the state 4228 per cent', or the 118 per between 1950 nations Although there have been some losses of manufacturing cmployment, there have been sizable new capital investments IN manufacturing in the Holland area In a recent study of economic development potentials for Holland.

nace Co in Boston, Mass, in the 1920's and owned and operated the Do Drop inn in Holland during the 1930's He worked for the Gallen agency as a licensed real estate broker He became a member of Trinity Reformed Church In 1931 and served on the consistory for a number of years He is on the board of directors of the Ottawa Savings and Loan Association. Shortly after his electian as city assessor In 1945, he was called by the city clerk who said, "'You are the assessor, the office 1s locked, the office girl has quit, please come down. please come down Starting cold and without benefit of previous experience or first-hand consultation, Bill Koop thus began a most successful 17-year career as city assessor for the city of Holland In sharp contrast to his own ex- perience, Koop announced his retirement early, helped recruit 8 qualified replacement, broke him in. and left his office for the last time Dec 31 in the able hands of Alwin De Haan. The tribute read: "Bill Koop has performed the duties of city assessor with skill, hard work and uncompromising integrity, coupled with friendly good will.

During three difficult periods of reappraisal the people maintained faith in this man whose judgment affected the most sensitive of governmental activity, the paying of local property taxes."
