Well, not exactly new "Marigold" was recorded nearly three years ago, and was released in Europe as a bonus track on the CD single of the song "Heart-Shaped Box." It has never come out intheU.S. 1 Now, two years after the death of Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain, it's beooming a big hit on KROQ, moving into the influential L.A. station's Top 10 listener requests since it started airing recently. The song was written and sung by drummer Dave Grohl, who now fronts the Foo Fighters, but it has Nirvana's distinctive sound, and Grohl's voice could easily be mistaken for Cobain's. "The hunger is definitely there for new.

Nirvana songs," says KROQ Music Director Lisa Wor-den, who heard "Marigold" last month after buying an import box set of Nirvana's European singles at the Virgin Megastore. "But we won't have new songs by Nirvana and this is a killer song." Given that hunger, it's remarkable that so little previously unre-leased Nirvana material has come out since Cobain's suicide in April, 1994.. The band's posthumous catalog is limited to one album culled from its "MTV Unplugged" session. A second live disc drawn from other concerts was originally set to accompany that album, but was scrapped and remains in limbo. And there are no plans for another U.S.

album like 1992's "Incesti-cide," which compiled B-sides and bonus tracks. "We are aware of the public's interest in hearing new music, and that's important to me," says Mark Kates, the Geffen Records artists and repertoire representative for Nirvana. "But anything involving Nirvana is emotional for many of us. Yes, eventually there will be other Nirvana releases. But I'm really hesitant to say more." In fact, Kates says, the company has no intention of even capitalizing on KROQ's spontaneous playing of "Marigold." There will be no advertising, video or any promotional activity from the label.

Geffen won't even be sending out copies of the song to radio stations. "There were a million different setups on the photo shoot they shot for six hours," says Kahane. "We didn't foresee they'd use that one." Perhaps they should have. Rolling Stone has a history of featuring flesh on its covers, from the early '80s shot of the Go-Go's in their undies to the recent tan-line-exposing photo of "Friends" star Jennifer Aniston. And, says Rolling Stone music editor Keith Moerer, no one forced Rossdale to pose like that. "The photo session wasn't engineered to produce a topless shot of him," Moerer says.

"But Bush's appeal and sales of 3 million albums is in part based on Gavin's hunk-dom, and now clearly they want to be taken more seriously, and we thought the juxtaposition worked to illustrate what the story is about." Kahane certainly hopes that if people buy the issue because of the cover, they'll be convinced by the story that there is more to the band than Rossdale's hunk appeal. But it's still a mixed message. As gossip columnist Liz Smith wrote last week: "This bubble-grunge icon wants to be taken seriously, but the boy can't help it-he's buff." -SJI. OASIS SLAM: A prominent English conservative activist is calling for a boycott of the band Oasis in response to interview comments by guitarist Noel Gallagher boasting about past criminal activities and his use of drugs and alcohol to stimulate creativity. Adrian Rogers, spokesman for the Conservative Family group with influence on the governing Conservative Party-said on the "GMTV" television show that he was outraged by Gallagher's comments to Melody Maker that as boys the band members burgled houses and stole car stereos and that "most of the songs I write are written under the influence of something or another." "This is actually yobbish, criminal behavior and most young peo-; pie don't want that," Rogers said.

"But there are some very simple people out there and some rather simple-minded youngsters who see this as a pinnacle of behavior. "This is evil, pop drugs culture. It's time that everybody who promoted it, sold it or had anything to do with it said, 'I'm not going to support that sort of society. Sean Demery, music director of Atlanta station WNNX-FM another influential alternative-rock outlet is excited about KROQ's success with the song and plans to buy the box set and try the track out on the air. "Nirvana is still huge here," he says. "On April Fools Day we had a right-wing guy from the AM talk station do our morning show and he said, 'Kurt Cobain's a bad role model. We're doing a poll, should we or shouldn't we play more We're still getting calls today, 'Hey man, you've gotta play Nirvana. Nirvana Steve Hochman COVER BOY: "Why won't anyone take Gavin Rossdale seriously?" That's the question posed on the cover of the latest issue of Rolling Stone, dated April 18, regarding the lead singer of the band Bush.

One answer can be found right next to those words: a beefcake photo of Rossdale, shirtless and reclining on a rumpled bed with a come-hither look. It's not exactly an image that screams "serious artist at work." And it's not the image that Bush would have chosen to present in this high-profile space. "I thought it was a contradictory message," says Bush's manager, Rob Kahane, noting that the band had no say in what photo was used. W' mW folk festival featuring -j. 1 sr.
