I TUESDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1994 LOS ANGELES TIMES Obituaries BRULTE: Leader Honed His Skills in Washington J6hn Osborne; Playwright Wrote 'Look Back in Anger5 rwWlLLIAMTUOHY OflflTttoES STAFF WRITER I i Lt nxtrs AKT 1 i i i i directly under me," Webb said an interview. "Not out of 'my office. He was not a political appointee on my staff, I can say that" Brulte now acknowledges that he "did not interact with Webb" and was assigned to an office outside the Pentagon, where' he worked on special projects and began to do advance work 1 for Bush. He explained that Bush and Reagan "relied on people in agencies" as well as individuals from corporate America to buttress the White House staff. "This is how presidents, whether you are Republican or Democrat, you cook the book," he said.

"You always reduce the number ot White House staff then you just detail people from agencies'. After six months, Brulte got, a post at the Department of Housing Please see BRULTE, A25 in recalling that he was the only male receptionist in the Senate at the time. Still, the job served as a launching pad for his career. By 1983, Brulte was tabbed as executive director of the Republican Hispanic Assembly, a group set up to energize Latino voters. Tirso del Junco, the assembly's chair- man, said Brulte's selection was not a unanimous choice.

"Everybody didn't want Jim Brulte because he could not speak any Spanish, but I felt this guy was very well qualified," said Del Junco, former state Republican chairman. "He knew his way around Washington." In March, 1985, Brulte became an assistant to the assistant secretary of defense for reserve affairs, James Webb a job he also listed proudly in campaign brochures. But Webb says he has no recollection of Brulte. "He did not work mother lives, remains a magnet. "My mom's house is still the center of our universe," he said, "because you can go back there and these are the people that knew you when you were a snotty-nosed little dirty kid." After graduating from high school, Brulte joined the California Air National Guard and in less than two years was named the nation's air guardsman of the year.

With the help of a local GOP activist, Brulte obtained an unpaid internship from then-Sen. S.I. Hayakawa (R-Calif.) while he was attending Azusa Pacific College. After Brulte's graduation from Cal Poly Pomona in 1980, Hayakawa gave him a job, which included driving the senator's mobile office around the state. Brulte had such a strong case of Potomac fever that he took the only job that Hayakawa had for him in Washington.

Continued from Al nationwide network of contacts and developed his ambitions for political office. As state Assembly Republican leader, he now finds himself at center stage, seeking to topple legendary Speaker Willie Brown, the San Francisco Democrat who has held onto the gavel for 14 years.

With Brulte and Brown deadlocked at 40 votes apiece, the Assembly will reconvene Jan. 4 to resume the. fight for what has been the second most powerful job in state government. "I'm going to be Speaker of the Assembly," Brulte said in an interview. "It's just a matter of time." Brulte would be the first Southern Californian in 20 years and the first Republican since 1970 to hold the speakership.

A Gargantuan figure at 6 feet 4 and 349 pounds, he has a gift for storytelling and a self-deprecating sense of humor, but he is a private person who is uncomfortable in the spotlight and whose political opponents accuse him of having a calculating side. Unlike many politicians at his level, the 38-year-old Brulte did not ascend to statewide prominence through a succession of election victories and powerful committee assignments. Although he does not have a long list of legislative accomplishments, there is a record here. Before he arrived in the Capitol four years ago, Brulte's chief claim to fame was that he had secured a series of low-level political appointments in Washington. Around his Ontario hometown, one old acquaintance recalls friends joking that Brulte was going through a job a week.

His critics say he has selectively traded on his ties to the Ronald Reagan and Bush administrations while campaigning. They contend that he dropped from his resume a potentially embarrassing eight months when he was assigned to the scandal-plagued Department of Housing and Urban Development, though there is no evidence he was caught up in the mess. It appears that he embellished a stint at the Pentagon, saying he worked for an assistant defense secretary, who today cannot recall him. More recently, the politician has been faulted for helping to approve a large pay boost for his girlfriend, Kelli Norton, while she was on the public payroll of the Assembly Republicans. Brulte's action was cited by Assemblyman Paul Horcher of Diamond Bar as one of his reasons for defecting from the Republicans and helping deny Brulte the speakership.

As GOP leader, Brulte acknowledges missteps but says he also deserves credit for improving Republican fortunes. "I think I've done a great job here. I've screwed up some. Maybe I shouldn't have dated Kelli," Brulte said. "But I think you have to look real hard to find any mistakes that I've made as leader Memorial Service will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday, December 28.

Jimmy Porter, the antihero of "Look Back," railed against the Establishment and its values, as did the author, who became a voice for the disgruntled of Britain's post-war generation. Richard Burton starred in a 1958 film version of the work. Osborne won his Oscar for his screenplay of the 1964 film "Tom i Jones." Among his other notable works are "The Entertainer," which many critics saw as a metaphor for a declining Britain and which starred Sir Laurence Olivier, "Luther" and "Inadmissible Evidence." In 1992, Osborne updated the Jimmy Porter story with a new play, "Deja Vu," in which his old hero now lives comfortably but rages against homosexuals and "luvvies," theatrical and literary folk.

The work was a critical and box-office failure. Osborne in his private life adopt ed the angry man persona. He was notorious for his hard drinking and irascibility. In a recent interview, he asked: "Who wants to live to 110 anyway if it means not smoking and not drinking?" Married five times, he savaged some of his wives in his autobiography and called his mother "hypocritical, self-absorbed, calculating and indifferent." Helen Dawson, his fifth wife, was at his hospital bedside when he died Saturday. His other wives were Pamela Lane, actress Mary Ure, writer Penelope Gilliatt and actress Jill Bennett, 'fjtiborne described Bennett in his miSnoirs, -''Almost a Gentleman," as "the most evil woman I've ever come across" and called her suicide "JXIoarse posturing of an over-St housemaid." Mount Sinai Mortuary Los Angeles Timet John Osborne in 1984 London theatrical scene and became notorious for firing off letters to newspapers and speaking out on a range of topics that piqued him. He once said critics were "nearly all cripples suffering from some terrible disease." At the Writers' Guild Awards in London two years ago, he denounced British theater as "this horrible profession which has never been held in more contempt." In his polemic "Damn You, England," he ripped his country, saying of it: "You're rotting now, and quite soon you'll disappear untouchable, unteachable, impregnable." Osborne began his career as an actor but started writing plays at age 19.

He moved from London to Clunton, Shropshire, in a deliberate attempt to flee the literary Establishment. Upon his death, which occurred after he was hospitalized for a diabetic condition, his friends took note of his abundant bile but also praised his talents. "He was a revolutionary writer," playwright Arthur Miller said. "He opened up British theater I suppose everybody is indebted to him for that;" Osborne "was wonderfully vindictive," Sheridan Morley, an author, playwright and critic, said. "He took no prisoners, gave no hostages.

He was full of loathing and yet there was a richness of language in John. He wrote wonderful roles, wonderful speeches. What is important is the energy of the man. He had this tremendous raging against the light. Whatever it was, John was there to hate it." LE SAGE, James Famechon, Jr.

"Because of his Falstaffian appearance some people have underestimated Brulte throughout his career and they have done so at their own risk," said David Beck-with, onetime press secretary for former Vice President Dan Quayle who has known Brulte since the 1988 raft trip.

Rose Forest Lawn Glendale By BURT A. FOLKART TIMES STAFF WRITER Rossano Brazzi, who played a series of aristocratic romantics in films ranging from "South Pacific" to "The Barefoot Contessa" before reverting to character parts in his later years, has died in Rome, Italian news agencies said Monday.

One of them, ANSA, quoting sources close to the actor's family, said Brazzi died Saturday in a Rome hospital from an undisclosed virus that affected his nervous system. He was 78. Brazzi played in more than 200 movies. Many of the most successful were filmed in the United States in the 1950s and '60s. His first Hollywood appearance was in "Little Women" (1949), but it was "The Barefoot Contessa" (1954) that made him a star specializing in roles as a Latin lover or well-heeled playboy.

His compelling magnetism probably was best typified in two films: "South Pacific" (1958), in which he played the cultured French planter opposite Mitzi Gaynor as the Army nurse who learns to love him, and "Summertime" (1955), in which he seduced spinster Katharine Hepburn despite being a married man with several children." Some of his other U.S. box-office successes included "Three Coins in the Fountain" (1954), "Woman Times Seven" (1967) and "Kraka-toa, East of Java" (1969). Born in Bologna, Italy, he was left an orphan when Mussolini's Fascists killed his parents. Brazzi studied law before turning to the stage and made his film debut in 1939, His success in the Italian cinema was immediate. He became a full-fledged U.S.
