Even as they pick jurors and debate a host of remaining legal issues, lawyers for both sides continue to build their cases and collect evidence. Tuesday, prosecutors received permission to clip hairs from two dogs one owned by Simpson and another belonging to his son but kept by his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, who was killed along with Ronald Lyle Goldman on June 12. Simpson has pleaded not guilty to the double murder. In a declaration filed with the court, Deputy Dist. Atty.

Marcia Clark said "white to tan animal hairs characteristic of dog hairs" were found on a bloody glove discovered outside Simpson's Brentwood mansion. Prosecutors want to have the FBI laboratory examine those hairs to determine whether they match those of the dog found wandering outside Nicole Simpson's home after the murders. They also want to compare hairs from a knit cap found at the crime scene to samples taken from Simpson's dog. If the hairs match the respective dogs, it would put hair from Simpson's pet at the crime scene and from Nicole Simpson's animal at her ex-husband's home bolstering the prosecution charge that the Please see SIMPSON, B4 Courts: Defense team cites Christopher Darden's role in grand jury probe of Al Cowlings. B6 COMMENTARY Fifty-five of the district's high schools were included in the state's annual measurement of high school achievement, which combines results of several standardized tests with such factors as completion records on college preparatory courses and graduation and dropout rates. This year for the first time, the state publicly released an average score that can be used to rank the schools, although state analysts cautioned against placing too much value on such ratings. "Just because a school has a high performance rating doesn't mean it's the best school in the state or the district," said Paula Wenzl, an education consultant with the state Department of Education. "It just means that it scored highest on these tests this particular year." A star linebacker for Long Beach City College, he was being heavily recruited by football powerhouses across the country. Football, Charles figured, was a means to a good education and a ticket out of the tough, gang-plagued Wilmington neighborhood where he lived with his grandmother. The 6-foot-2, 230-pounder with a 3.0 grade-point average kept his distance from those who lived by the gun, pausing only long enough to give them his respect. But sometimes, when you're cheek-by -jowl with trouble, that's all it takes to become a victim.

The option Charles had sought so hard to create for himself vanished when he was shot and killed one night last week in a shooting that police said stemmed from ongoing tension between Wilmington's black and Latino gangs. He had lived with a tension that surrounds countless young adults struggling to find a higher path in neighborhoods where gang violence is common. Their lives inevitably crisscross with those they grew up with as children, people whose lives are steeped in warfare. Charles' funeral Tuesday in San Pedro drew about 600 mourners a multiethnic collection of neighbors, teammates and others, packed in a small chapel at Green Hills Mortuary. "I always told him that he could do anything he wanted to do with himself," said his mother, Irma Irving, who lives in a nearby section of Los Angeles.
