For UA Allen had done. what many consider his signature films "Manhattan" and Hall." For Orion his strings of successes continued with "Crimes and Misdemeanors," "Radio Days," "Hannah and Her SistersMThe Purple Rose of Cairo" and othersi After he left Orion, Krim became counsel to the prestigious Hew York law firm of Phillips, Benjamin, Krim Ballon, Before UA and Orion, Krim -had headed Eagle-Lion Film Cocrv a subsidiary of Pathe Industries.1- Privately, Krim had been' an active alumnus and the Board of Trustees of Columbia University and Columbia Law School, where he graduated With honors in 1932. He was activ'in the civil rights movement, a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corp. and an intimate of its chairman, Armand Ham'mer, and a director of the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science. In his book, Brownstein wr'dte that the low-key executive was a man of "impregnable He also quoted an industry source as saying, "You would never know' from seeing Arthur Krim the amount of wealth he had 'br power or people that he (i Besides his wife, Krim is survived by a daughter, curred nearly all its debt before its later triumphs, and the revenue that "Lambs" and "Wolves" generated was too little and too late.

It also was said that the company had been undercapitalized from its inception. Krim's innovative management techniques first became obvious in the early 1950s when he and another shrewd young lawyer, Robert Benjamin, began attracting independent producers to the troubled United Artists Corp. They lacked production facilities but instead offered financing and allowed producers to retain ownership of their pictures. In return the producers deferred much of their fees. Out of that mutually attractive arrangement came "The African Queen" and "High Noon," among other film classics, and UA returned to a prominence that it hadn't enjoyed in many years.

Some maintained that it became the best showcase for talent since Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin and others started the studio after World War I. By 1966 Krim, Wasserman, Jack Warner and other studio chiefs hired Jack Valenti to advance their common interests as president of the Motion Picture Assn. of America. But a dozen years later, in a dispute with Transamerica which owned UA, Krim and his management team moved on. Krim started Orion, and to his new studio came one of his old friends and best customers at United Artists Woody Allen.

Many of Allen's most successful By BURT A. FOLKART TIMES STAFF WRITER Arthur B. Krim, a film executive and financier who befriended and Influenced such dissimilar Americans as John F. Kennedy and Woody Allen, died Wednesday in his New York City home at 84. A spokesman said the former chairman of United Artists and founder of Orion Pictures Corp.

had been in failing health since heart surgery last year. In his 1990 book "The Power and the Glitter: The Hollywood Washington Connection," Los Angeles Times political correspondent Ronald Brownstein noted that it was common to say that if MCA's Lew Wasserman wasn't the smartest man in Hollywood, Arthur Krim was. In New York the order probably would have been reversed. Physically, the two men had little in common, but mentally they shared a toughness and a commitment to profits and Democratic politics. They helped raise $10 million for Lyndon Johnson's 1964 skewering of Barry Goldwater, and Krim was instrumental in setting up a President's Club for Kennedy where the President had access to funds to help friendly congressmen in their campaigns.

Shortly after learning of Krim's death, Wasserman said simply that he was "grieving for the loss of an old, dear friend." Besides politics and films, Krim was deeply involved in the battle 1 "TTey, you got to have jobs. We can't invest in education if JTl we don't have people at work who are paying taxes. California needs a governor who's going to be fighting for jobs. That is a Democratic tradition." State Treasurer Kathleen Brown, when asked If her economic plan resembled Republican programs Arthur B. Krim in 1966 against AIDS.

His wife Mathilde is founding chairwoman of the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AMFAR). In an industry often criticized for the divisiveness among talent and management, Krim was noted at Orion for his support of such long-shot projects as "Amadeus" and "Platoon." But by late 1991, despite the successes of "Dances With Wolves" and "The Silence of the Orion had been forced by debt to cut back 250 of its 400 employees. The distributor owed millions of dollars and had filed for bankruptcy. Krim was released from his contract. Ironically, the company had in 1 Kathleen Brown, who has been pressuring Gov.

Pete Wilson to debate her, unveiled a 10-second ad that compares him to a small carnivorous mammal. "What do you call someone who won't debate?" asks the ad, which begins running statewide today. To the tune of "Pop Goes the Weasel," a portrait of Wilson appears and a voice says, "That's right. A weasel." After urging voters to call Wilson's campaign headquarters, the ad concludes, "Don't let Wilson weasel out." two grandchildren. The Wilson campaign promptly retorted that Northrop was forced lo cut back the B-2 program because of decisions made by the Clinton Administration. "Even Northrop's own leadership credits Pete Wilson with his efforts to save the B-2," said campaign spokesman Dan Schnur. Schnur faxed reporters a copy of a July 20, 1994, "Dear Pete" letter from Northrop Grumman Chairman Kent Krese to Wilson, saying, "You were most helpful recently in contacting your former colleagues in the Senate regarding the B-2 program." Brown used the El Segundo plant, which still employs 4,000 workers, as the backdrop for her proposal to preserve and revive the aerospace industry in Southern California. "The names Hawthorne and Northrop go together just like so I many Southern California cities whose aerospace workers put the area on the map," Brown said, referring to another Northrop plant in nearby Hawthorne, There are Burbank and Lockheed, Redondo Beach and TRW, and Long Beach and McDonnell Douglas, she said, which produce vehicles such as the DC-3 and L-1011 airplanes and the Viking, Mariner and Discovery spacecraft.

Brown pledged to ease air quality rules against the use of certain paints and solvents in airplane manufacture in the Los Angeles Basin. She said she would seek an antitrust law exemption to allow competing American aircraft manufacturers to work together on the research, development and manufacture of new passenger planes. Schnur, the Wilson aide, said there is nothing in Brown's plan "that Pete Wilson has not already, done, is not already doing or has not found a better way to do." At Northrop, Brown was asked if her program didn't sound more Republican than Democratic.

FOLKART TIMES STAFF WRITER Iris Adrian, the wisecracking, gum-snapping gun moll or comic who portrayed what she said were "tough broads who were never mean" in dozens of films, has died. Richard Kappler, a longtime friend, said that the brassy blonde veteran of 150 generally low-budget pictures, whose last appearances were in such Disney films as "The Love Bug" and "Herbie Goes Bananas," was 82. Kappler said she had died in her Hollywood Hills home of complications of injuries she suffered during the Northridge earthquake in January. Married for nearly 30 years to former football star Ray (Fido) Murphy, Miss Adrian enjoyed a comfortable lifestyle thanks to shrewd investments she had made in real estate over the years.

Interviewers delighted in the candor she maintained into her last decade. She once told author Richard Lamparski that "I never went with actors. Basically they're bums who got lucky in the looks department. Vain, vain. It would be like dating another dame." She was raised in Los Angeles and forced to quit school after her father died during the post-World War I flu epidemic.

She entered beauty contests, won several and became a chorine in a local musical revue. She toured with the Fred Waring shows of the early 1930s and was signed for the Ziegfeld Follies of 1931. She returned to Los Angeles and began developing her trademark wisecracking character for skits at Nils T. Granlund's nightclubs in Hollywood, she told Lamparski. Miss Adrian began in films in the early 1930s and her best-known parts included the killer in "Roxie Hart" in 1942 and the burlesque queen in "Lady of Burlesque" the year.

In 1985. To pay off considerable debt, Pacific Lumber accelerated its logging practices, clear-cutting lands where it previously had harvested trees selectively. The bill authorizes the Agriculture Department to acquire the 44,000 acres through land exchanges, donations or purchases. Hamburg said environmentalists and timber interests were far apart; at the start of the legislative process but wound up supporting the' final product. The acquisition of land under the bill would be phased in, and about 90 of the acreage would be available for timber harvest, Hamburg said.

From a Times Staff Writer WASHINGTON The House on Wednesday passed a forest-protection bill, authorizing the federal government to acquire 44,000 acres of timberland in Humboldt County for inclusion in the existing Six ilivers National Forest. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Dan Hamburg (D-Ukiah), would also protect 3,200 acres of old-growth redwoods known as the Headwaters Forest and would require study of an additional 14,000 acres for possible acquisition. "People just don't want to see these redwoods cut down for deck furniture," he said. The bill, the Headlands Forest Act, passed 288 to 133 and now heads to the Senate, i Hamburg said that a companion bill was introduced in the Senate by Sen.
