Moved to safety his senior season and played well enough to be named second-team all-state in New Jer FROM PAGE C1 "It appears to a good class with a lot of talent across the board," Raymond said. "We've really stabilized in recent years. There was a time when when we frequently had to do patchwork, fecruiting a lot of linebackers or linemen to meet immediate needs." Nagy becomes the third recruited pure quarterback in as many seasons, a departure from Delaware's recruiting past. The decision was based on the fact that Hamlett will 1 be playing his final season and that Delaware is starting from scratch to fill the losses of backups Keith Lan- gan and Mike DiMartile. Mike Como, a 1994 recruit, is no longer on the team and returnees Brian Ginn and walk-on Rob Myers from Lake Forest were not on last season's travel squad.

Ginn and Myers have a headstart with their season of demonstration and next spring's drills but Nagy could be in the mix next preseason. "His performance and credentials rank up there with the better quarterbacks we've had, said offen-sive coordinator Ted Kempski. Nagy's strength has been his passing. In the last two seasons for Manheim High, 26-2 with both losses being to nationally -ranked Berwick in the state tournament, the lanky quarterback completed 68 percent of his passes and piled up 3,500 passing yards. But he also guided a diversified offense which included the triple option.

"He's not as fast as the quarterback Delaware has now," Manheim High Coach Mike Williams said, "but he knows what he's doing on the option He can be magical. I'm looking forward to Matt establishing himself as a great quarterback at a school that has a history of having great quarterbacks." Nagy's 40-yard time is a modest 4.9 seconds but he plans to spend considerable time after basketball working on improving his speed. If necessary, Blue Hen coaches have identified several who appear solid enough to help early. Tyrone Bowden of West Chester, could be a factor at cornerback while Craig Cummings Eastch-ester, N.Y., Dominic Banks Newport News, Va. and Derrick Downs Philadelphia's Malvern Preparatory School could play integral roles in the re-establishment of depth following the loss of running backs Pat Williams, Kai Hebron and Marvell Scott.

By RICHARD ROSENBLATT Associated Press This time, Penn State got the quarterback it craved and ended up the big winner on national signing day in college football. The Nittany Lions, who lost top-rated Dan Kendra to Florida State a year ago, signed Rashard Casey, the highly touted quarterback from Hoboken, N.J., Wednesday. Add versatile running backs Joe Dawkins of Hackensack, N.J., and Ken Watson of Harrisburg, plus the usual lot of promising linebackers and coach Joe Pa-terno's incoming group topped Southern California for the nation's strongest recruiting class. "The edge goes to Penn State because they have the best quarterback," said Allen Wallace, publisher of SuperPrep magazine in Laguna Beach, Calif. Rounding out SuperPrep's top 10 were Notre Dame, Ohio State, Florida State, national champion Nebraska, Michigan, Tennessee, Colorado and lJ.
