"U.S. car buyers just aren't reading the way they should this year, based on every' thing we've figured' out about them over the years," complains a Chrysler sales executive. The mysterj' of what's wrong has been no spring upturn with why, contrary to almost in business. Second weirdest factor is the sus. tained boom in used car sales. Prices of used cars are going up steadily, too. Traditionally, heavy used car sales are followed promptly by equally heavy car sales. It just isn't happening this year.

The present high cost of new $40 to $125 above 1955 said to be a factor In turning the public toward cheaper automobiles. But the statistics poke a hole in this theory, too. For example, two of the highest- priced oars on the market, Lincoln and Cadillac, are among the few makes enjoying equal or better sales than during the '55 boom. And the new $10,000 Continental, made by Ford, is selling; as fast as it is produced. Although ail Chrysler Corp makes are down in sales, its most expensive one, the Imperial, is down least of all over last year, only two- tenths of one per cent.

Chrysler also reports a heavier demand for expensive extra power equipment, over last year. Last year 56 per cent of Chrysler customers bought automatic transmissions while today 86 per cent are buying them. Power steering demand is up from 25 per cent last year to 48 per cent this year. Demand for power brakes, seats and windows has more than doubled. Another indication that customers aren't simply looking for cheaper models this year is the boom in all makes oi the more expensive station wagon models.

21ose to 12 per cent of all passenger sold this far in 1956 are wa- fons. Ford continues to dominate this riarket, accounting for about 45 icr cent of all of them being sold. 3ut all makers are moving into this ucratlvc field quickly. Station wa- ton popularity accounts for the in- jrease in business of American Motor's Nash Rambler this year, iver last year's sales. The most widespread general ex- genernl explanation of why the bottom has fallen out of the market is that 1955's wild competition- featuring the Ford-Chevrolet race the sale of too many cars Chewy won a gnat's eyelash over Ford.

However, Chevrolet, the car which apparently was "oversold" more than any other in 1955, is now selling better than it did last year. At the end of the first quarter Chevrolet sales were up over the same period last year, 401,588 cars to 347,242. DC-segregated artoi Pro-iegregotronift groups Areoi where violence Has Hortd up. TWO YEARS been two years DOW since the Supreme Court made its famuus decision on segregation. What's the situation in Southern schools like today? The map, above, compiled from data by the Southern Education Reporting Service, gives you an idea.

De-segre-' gation has been instituted in the fringe states, even where pro-segregation centers are to be found. But the Deep South remains untouched by tha shaded areas, symbolizing integration. The percentage Negroes enrolled in schools in the states identified on the map is 23.6 of the total enrollment Mississippi has the highest per cent West Virginia has only 5.2 per ceot Negroes in its schools. AFL-CIOGroup Quits State Merger Fight WASHINGTON AFL- CIO Building and Construction Department yesterday called off its rebellion against furthur state and local mergers of AFL and CIO union groups. Richard Gray, Building Trades Department president, wrote all building trades unions to discontinue their two-month old policy of opposing such mergers.

Gray said AFL-CIO President George Meany has proposed a new method of solving jurisdiction troubles which "we believe will be the means of settling this contro- versey to the satisfaction of all concerned." The building trades group, all were doing construction work around manufacturing plants that former AFL unions, had complained that Industrial Union Department unions, formerly CIO, should be performed by building trade members. Meany's solution, accepted by the building trades to end their boycott of furthur mergers, was to name a committee to lay down a general policy once and for all on which type of work should go to each union's members.
