Over the last few years McNeese State's football offense has come fo include the passing game more and more. Last year the teed the pass one out of every four plays. This fall they may use it more often as head coach Jim Clark strives to get the passing and running phases of his offense onto an even keel. A big factor in Clark's decision to try and even up the running and passing could be the fact that he has two fine passers on the dub in quarterbacks David Bourgeois sad Greg Dupin and two equally adepth pass receivers in ends Frank Miller and R.

C. Slocum. Miller, who transferred from a junior college last year and turned out to be a starter at the split end position for the Pokes, was one of the top pass receivers in the Gulf States Conference, ranking eighth with 18 receptions for 231 yards and one touchdown. The slender native of Bay St. Louis, also set a Cowboy single game record last fall by hauling in 10 passes against Memphis State.

Mainly an offensive performer, Miller will play little if no defense. Slocum, who divided his time between the split side and the tight side last year, was given a permanent station at tight enc during the spring training am responded well enough to ge first shot at the starting role this fall. In dividing his time between the split and tight end positions last year Slocum managed to rank second to Miller in pas receiving on the club as he caught 11 passes for 122 yards on one TD. A native of Orange, two year letterman and a ju nior, Slocum can also play defense and will probably len is 6-2, 194 pound frame for ome action there this fall. Backing up Miller and Slo- trm throughout the season at nd will be defensive ends Don Martin and Charles Landry, red- shirts of last year Handy Whit- takef and Ben Marchive and icomttg ffeshfiiea Wayne Ces- tva of Bolton High, Jim Price Sulphur and Ronald Carrier Church Point.

The Sportsmen shutout Auto- rama, 6-0, behind the six-hit pitching of Willie LeBlanc, while 5 an Am edged St. Margaret, 5-4. The Sportsmen went out in front 1-0 in the first inning, and that one run proved to be enough. Don Faulk added another in the fourth with a homer, and also went two-for-three, driving in four runs.

Pan Am had a big four-run 'irst inning and then, stopped a St. Margaret rally one run short in the final inning for the victory. Pokes and both are juniors. The two have been primarily defensive performers and will probably spend most of their time this season on defense. Landry, who is from Kaplan, may be given a shot at an offensive post in the faH.

On defense he will spell Stocnm whife Martin, from Lake Charles, will take over for Miller. Whittaker and Marchive are two freshmen redshirts of last year who Cowboy coaches are hoping wQl develop. Both are game competitors and hard workers. Incoming freshmen Carrier and Price are expected to be tried at the split side with Cespiva, who was a standout defensive end in high school, set for the tight side. Carrier is rated an excellent pass With four of the seven lettering ends from last year's football team returning, the Cowboys expect to be a little strong; er on offense at end this season but weaker on defense since all conference terminal Paul luidry is one who played out lis eligibility.
