PAGE EIGHT THE NEWS-COMET, EAST BERLIN, MAY 24, 1946 William Farm Used As Example Adams county farmers who attended the field meeting at the A. B. C. Williams farm at York i Springs Friday had the opportunity i to learn from the experiences of Williams with Ladino clover, as well; as hear the results of pasture im! provement work explained by John extension agronomist and L. C.

Madison, livestock specialist, from State College. Last year Mr. Williams kept 45 sows and pigs all summer on a two! and a half acre hog pasture on good soil near the home farm barn, and in August the Ladino became so rank that he turned 17 head of cattle on it for three weeks, according to M. T. Hartman, county farm agent.

Profitable Return "On an adjoining farm," Mr. Hartman continued, "which Mr. Williams purchased about five years ago in a low state of fertility, he made a pasture seeding on wheat four years ago on 18 acres of rather thin red shale soil. The seeding contained timothy and Kentucky bluegrass. sown in the fall, and the normal clover mixture, to which about a pound per acre of Ladino was added, sown in the spring.

The next year a crop of hay was harvested and last year the field was pastured. "Forty-five head of steers weighing from 600 to 800 pounds were put on these 18 acres, plus six acres of thin, unimproved bluegrass, in early- June, and kept there with no extra feed until October. They gained an average of 175 pounds for the season. Figuring. 150 days, this is only one and one-fourth pounds per day, which is not sensational, but figuring that the 18 acres, which furnished nearly all the feed, carried two and one-half head per acre and made a per acre production of 437 pounds of beef, the returns per acre were might profitable."
