"Like that fight would require fixing?" Berns said. Brian D. Soccer Portugal qualified for the Olympic soccer tournament for the first time since the 1920s, beating Italy, 1-0, in Lisbon on a goal by Hugo Porflrio in the 18th minute. In an effort to avert the first Italian players' strike, the national federation called a meeting of top officials to mediate the settlement of some thorny issues. However, Sergio Campana, the president of the association of professional players, said he would not attend the Rome meeting. From Staff and Wire Reports Disappointed fans threw rocks and bottles, set fires and stormed the field in Calcutta on Wednesday, and officials awarded cricket's World Cup semifinal match between India and Sri Lanka to Sri Lanka. The Indian crowd of 110,000 at Eden Gardens was outraged over Sri Lanka's dominance over the Indian batsmen.

Police were needed to clear the field as fires burned in the stands and outside the stadium. The players returned after 20 minutes, but objects continued to rain down. Football The Kansas City Chiefs signed quarterback Bucky Richardson to a two-year contract. In three seasons with the Houston Oilers, Richardson, 27, started four times. Free agent safety Dana Hall, who played for the Cleveland Browns last season and for three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers before that, signed a four-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Not So Fast, Buster Six years ago, James "Buster" Douglas came out of obscurity to shock the world by handing Mike Tyson his only defeat. 1 Later that same year, Douglas disappeared back into obscurity after losing the heavyweight title to Evander Holyfield. Douglas hasn't been heard from since.

Until now. In a sport in which middle-aged Roberto Dur- an and Larry Holmes are still able to obtain boxing i licenses, retirement is often only a temporary cqndition. And sure enough, Douglas, in training for more than a year in Florida, is planning to return to the ring in May. Shelly Wood, Douglas' personal assistant, told the Associated Press that Douglas, who will turn 36 next month, will face Tony LaRosa May 18 in Miami as part of the undercard of the Hector Camacho-Duran fight. -STEVE SPRINGER HEY BIG SPENDER (5-2) got al the window aentton tost week but didn't have tht needed punch after hat-over journey.

He knocked Herrera down in the second round, but couldn't put him away. Still, Ruelas had enough to earn the victory, improving to 42-3 with 23 knockouts. Herrera, who weighed 137, is 21-3 with 19 knockouts.

In the 10-round semi-main event, Kenny Keene won a unanimous decision over former Olympic gold medalist Andrew Maynard in a 10-round cruiserweight match. Maynard, who hadn't fought in nearly two years, dropped to 24-7 with 20 knockouts. He was the victim of a head butt in the ninth round that streamed blood down his face for the remainder of the fight. Keene improved to 33-1 with 21 knockouts. Comedian Jay Leno worked Eric "Butterbean" Esch's corner in a' four-round prelim, and Butterbean pounded out a first-round knockout of Billy McDonald at the 1:43 mark.

Esch improved to 18-1 with 13 knockouts. McDonald is 3-3 with all three victories coming on knockouts. In another preliminary fight, cruiserweight Roar Petajamma remained undefeated at 11-0 with seven knockouts by winning a unanimous decision in a six-round match against Angel Arreola (3-5-2, two knockouts). By STEVE SPRINGER TIMES STAFF WRITER Shaking off the lingering effects of having thrown the fatal blows that killed Jimmy Garcia last spring, Gabriel Ruelas won a unanimous 10-round decision over Julio Cesar Herrera at the Olympic Auditorium on Wednesday night before about 3,000. It was a very different Ruelas from the one who lost the World Boxing Council super-featherweight title to Azumah Nelson in December in five rounds.

On that night, Ruelas said he saw the ghost of Garcia in the ring. When Wednesday's fight was over, Ruelas looked up at the ceiling and thanked Garcia for not making a return appearance. "He was not there," Ruelas said. "He has no business in the ring. He didn't bother me like I thought he would this time." While Ruelas said he doesn't expect Garcia to haunt him again, he said he'll always think of the Beat Bat ONE OF KINO (7th) 9 1-MU10N TOSHBA SEMOR CLASSIC At ftiwM Beast Coaauy Can Par 71 WWvTOUAL- 70 Ba TOAS SOfrDBI SHOOTOUT FM 324am jam RNAUSTS-I.
