THE NEWS JOURNAL D5 THURSDAY, NOV. 26, 1992 Reds ign Varho9 Espy Yankees withdraw offers to free agents the offers in each of the cities and trying to make the decision on where it's best for him to play." Michael, who also is said to be interested in Greg Maddux and Greg Swindell, said he made an additional offer to another pitcher and said he may make another one today. He said agents were trying to use his offers to raise prices with other clubs. "They were shopping them like I didn't want," he said. Cincinnati had no such problems getting the outfielders it wanted to back up Kevin Mitchell, Roberto Kelly and Reggie Sanders.

Varsho and Espy were among five players let go last week by the NL East champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Varsho made $367,500 last season, when he hit .222 with four homers and 22 RBls in 103 games. Espy hit .258 with one homer and 20 RBIs in 112 games and made $320,000. Gubicza, a 30-year-old righthander, was 7-6 with a 3.72 ERA last season as he continued a comeback from 1990 rotator cuff surgery. He made $2.5 million in 1992, the final season of a three-year deal worth $7.4 million.

"He has worked hard rehabilitating his shoulder since being injured at midseason, and he will be ready to help us again in 1993, Royals General Manager Herk Robinson said. "He's been a quality pitcher for us for a number of years, and we're glad to have him back both as a player and as a leader on the club." Associated Press NEW YORK While the New York Yankees made and withdrew multimillion dollar offers to Doug Drabek, David Cone and Jose Guzman, former Pirates Gary Varsho and Cecil Espy found new homes in Cincinnati on Wednesday. Mark Gubicza re-signed with the Kansas City Royals as baseball's free agent market began to get busy. Gubicza agreed to a $1.25 million, one-year deal with the chance to equal his 1992 pay with 10 bonus levels of $125,000 each based on innings. Varsho and Espy, released earlier this week by Pittsburgh, agreed to $400,000 deals with the Reds.

Varsho's deal is guaranteed, Espy's isn't. In addition, Cecil Fielder and the Detroit Tigers were said to be discussing a $30 million, five-year deal, but also were said to be far apart on contract language dealing with the guarantee of his pay during a lockout. Fielder, who is not a free agent, has demanded a trade as part of his negotiating strategy. The biggest news was the offers made by the Yankees, who appear to be gearing for a big off-season prior to the return of owner George Steinbrenner from suspension. Yankees General Manager Gene Michael said he had made and withdrawn offers to Guzman and Drabek, and a source said Cone also was in the group.

The Guzman offer was worth approxi- Lewis key for Glasgow Sophomore QJB a 'special' player By KEVIN TRESOLINI Staff reporter GLASGOW Tyjuan Lewis does some things rarely seen from a sophomore quarterback, not the least of which is start for a state tournament football team. The only time Lewis has surprised Dave Scott, his coach at Glasgow High, was when Scott walked into the Glasgow weight-room one day last June and was greeted by Lewis. "He walked up to me and said 'My name's Scott said. "I said, 'I know who you What Scott didn't know until then was that Lewis had moved back to Delaware after a year in Lancaster, Pa. "I saw him in eighth grade on the Glasgow Dragons Capitol Trail League team," Scott said.

"He was a one-man wrecking crew. I told Scott Cressman Glasgow's defensive coordinator that he'd start for us as a freshman. In August of 1991 I found out he'd moved to Lancaster." This year, to Scott's delight, Lewis moved back. After coming off the bench to throw his first pass for a touchdown in Glasgow's 26-24 loss to William Penn on Oct. 2, Lewis became Glasgow's starting quarterback.

His running and throwing Lewis has tossed 12 TD passes in eight games helped the Dragons go 8-2 and earn a berth in the Division I state tournament, in which Glasgow again meets William Penn (also 8-2) in a semifinal game Friday. Kickoff is at noon at Bill Cole News Journal file Coach Ron Dickerson has led Seaford Into the state tournament eight times. Surprising Seaford faces a tough task against Salesianum Pairings for the first round of the state high school football playoffs: News Journal tile Royals' Mark Gubicza: one-year deal mately $13 million for four years, but the amount of the offers to Cone and Drabek wasn't known. "They're off the board," Michael said. "If we haven't signed anyone in three or four days, they can come back to us." Barry Meister, Guzman's agent, said he was talking with 11 teams and that seven had shown serious interest in the 29-year-old righthander, who was 16-11 last season with a 3.66 ERA.

"We hope to decide by the end of this week," Meister said. "We're just going through each of phone from his Narragansett home. "Hopefully it will be a positive change for the University of Rhode Island. "We had a great run in the early '80s. We were one of the top teams nationally and went to the semifinals in 1984," Griffin said.

"We really felt in 1990 and '91, going 5-6 and 6-5, we had turned our program around and were up to the heights we experienced in Rhode Island fires grid coach Griffin MM? WlMW MfP "Ask Us Vb What Else?" By ED MURPHY Staff reporter SEAFORD Ron Dickerson has constructed one of the premier football programs in the state at Seaford High during the past two decades. After suffering through a 2-8 season in 1991, Djckerson's Blue Jays have quickly re-established their reputation with a 9-1 record this year. The surprise team in the Division I state tournament, Seaford returns to the playoffs after a two-year absence and gets a tough assignment against Salesianum (8-2) at 2 p.m. Saturday at Baynard Stadium. "The players decided to accomplish something and they focused on playing good football," said Dickerson, who has a career record of 146-56-9 at Seaford.

Seaford has been a fixture in the state tournament, reaching the finals in '81, '82 and '83. The Blue Jays have made eight tournament appearances under Dickerson. Seaford completed a 12-0 season and captured the Division I title in '81 with a victory over William Penn (20-13). The Blue Jays won the Division II title against Arch-mere (40-12) and were 10-1-1 in '83. Seaford has met Salesianum just one time on the football field in the '86 semifinals.

The Catholic powerhouse, which has played in five state title games since '71, won 17-6. The Blue Jays have lost their last four tournament games, falling to Glasgow in '85, Salesianum in '86 and William Penn in '87 and '89. "We've done really well in the tournaments lately, haven't we?" joked Dickerson. "We did OK when we played Division II teams, when we played teams our size. We're playing people twice as big as we are.

But that's the way things go. Our kids don't worry about it." Seaford plays as a Division I school because it has one more student than Lake Forest enrolled in grades 10 through 12. Seaford has 602 male and female students, while Lake Forest has 601 students, making it a Division II school. Salesianum was ranked No. 1 in the state by The News Journal before losing to Glasgow, 14-10, last week.

The Sals bounced back from their first losing season in 14 years to gain the playoffs. Salesianum won the Division I title in '86, but lost in the title game to William Penn (8-0) and Dover (20-13 in overtime) the next two years. Sallies also won a state title in '72. 'They're an excellent team," said Dickerson. "They are well-balanced offensively.

can throw. You can't let them grind out four or five yards each play and keep your defense on the field for a long time." Seaford has won nine straight after losing to Brandywine, 16-6, on opening day. The Blue Jays ended Caesar Rodney's three-year reign in the Henlopen North, built up steam by averaging 43 points a game in crushing victories over Dover, Cape Henlopen, Sussex Central, Indian River and Milford, and finished up with a 3-0 victory at Laurel on Brian Miller's 27-yard field goal. Seaford's Wing-T may be more explosive than ever with junior fullback Mike Coverdale and junior halfback Thalamus Trammell leading the way. Coverdale has rushed for 1,004 yards and scored 17 touchdowns, while Trammell has added 546 yards and six TDs.

The offensive line guards Fred Hertrich and Fritz Jenniton, tackles Cordell Abbott and James Simpson and center Donald Moore has been a force. "Trammell and Coverdale are big threats," said Dickerson. "They are quick. They get what's there, put the move on people and stretch out extra yards." Junior quarterback Wyatt Lowe completed 45 passes for 778 yards and nine TDs, and Miller gives Seaford a kicking game. "Nobody has run inside on Sallies all year," Dickerson said.

"Lowe will have to loosen them up with the pass." Defensively, the Blue Jays have recorded six shutouts. "The strong point of our defense is in the. secondary," said Dickerson. "Defensive backs Carlos Palmer, Damien Griffin and Tim Miller, linebackers Mike Kappes and Hertrich and. safety Dion Kellam have done a fine job." speed.

That's sort of crazy." Trainer Brian Barry said he'll know by today whether Faulk will be able to play. "He's feeling quite a bit better," Barry said. Faulk, the leading rusher in major-college football with an average of 163 yards per game, has been doing exercises for his range of motion and strength. Faulk will be checked again this morning. If he feels good, his on-field work will be increased, Barry said.

"Most sopho LEWIS mores would be in the end zone celebrating. After the play, I looked and he was standing right next to me, asking me what I wanted to run on the conversion." Shannon Riley began the season as Glasgow's starting quarterback after transferring from Newark. Lewis started on defense. But now, with Riley starting on defense and playing wide receiver he had a big catch in Glasgow's 14-10 win over Salesianum last week and Lewis barking signals, Scott said he's getting the most out of both players. "I knew from the first day of practice I could play quarterback," said Lewis, who was a varsity backup quarterback as a freshman at McCaskey High in Lancaster last year.

"We had so many athletes on this team, I was happy to help out wherever I could. I figured since I'm just a sophomore, my time would come." The 6-foot-l, 175-pound Lewis also has a 69-yard punt return for a touchdown this season and caught a touchdown pass on a throwback against Newark. But athletic ability is far from Lewis' only gift, Scott said. "He's super smart," Scott said. "Every play we call, we tell him the type and he decides where it's going.

He does a lot more than just a normal quarterback. Against Newark, he called three audibles and they all went for touchdowns." Lately, Lewis has proven to be a quick and elusive runner, giving defenses one more headache when facing Glasgow. "Everybody wants the ball on this team. Everybody can do something with the ball," Lewis said frankly. "The last couple of games I decided to run more because teams have been dropping back in coverage." "He's found out that if people play coverage, you can cover the receivers, but you can't cover the quarterback and you can't put pressure on him, too," Scott said.
