Ridley, formerly of Cheswold, had lived in the Dover area since 1903. He worked for Richardson Robbins Coty Inc. and Bennetts Security Agency, all in Dover. He was a member of Cheswold United Methodist Church for 60 years; the Cheswold Volunteer Fire Company for 46 years, where he was treasurer for 14 years; the Cheswold Town Council and the Delaware State Guard during World War II. His wife, Hazel died in 1966.

He is survived by five sons, Joel W. II and Earl both of Dover, Fred D. of Kenton, James E. of Oakwood, and the Rev. Douglas M.

of Wilmington; two daughters, Sue R. Urian, with whom he lived, and Martha R. Collins of Wilmington; 18 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Cheswold United Methodist Church, Main Street, Cheswold.

RYAN, formerly of Dorset Condominiums, Wilmington, died Wednesday of heart failure in Leader Nursing Rehabilitation Center, 700 Foulk Road, Brandywine Hundred, where she was a patient for five months. Her age. was not disclosed. Mrs. Ryan was an avid golfer in Wilmington and Singer Island, Fla.

She was a longtime member of Wilmington and Du Pont country clubs. Her husband, Thomas died in 1983. She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Zolper of Wilmington; five grandsons; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial Mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St.

Joseph on the Brandywine Catholic Church, Greenville. Burial will be private. The family asks that flowers not be sent. HOWARD STONE, 84, formerly of Williamsburg, died Friday in Millcroft, Possum Park Road, Newark, his residence for the past five years. Mr.

Stone, held a Ph.D. in linguistics, taught modern languages for 25 years at the College of William Mary, Williamsburg. He retired 25 years ago. He fluently spoke 16 languages. He moved to Delaware in 1987.

His wife, Nancy B. Stone, died in 1987. Surviving are sons, Robert G. of Newark and Marshall D. of San Jose, a daughter, Penelope Smith of Huntsville, a brother, Kenneth of Berkeley, seven grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren.

Arrangements by the McCRERY FUNERAL HOMES Elizabeth Hill; teacher, writer of children's books By MARY HAGER Special to The News Journal GREENVILLE Elizabeth Bjork Hill enjoyed telling stories to her younger sister when she baby-sat for her.

Her high school English teacher encouraged her to write down her stories, and when she was in her twenties she sold her first children's book. Mrs. Hill, a retired elementary school teacher, died Thursday of cancer in the Methodist Country House. She was 77. Mrs.

Hill's first children's book was "A Purple Pig for Pedro" and was followed a few years later by "Elsa's Lullaby." During the Depression, she sold many short stories for children. A recent book, "Short-Shorts, A Couple of Dozen Stories," was published Saturday. Mrs. Hill wrote a weekly column for years in the Aldersgate (United Methodist Church) Messenger. She began teaching in a oneroom eight grade school with 31 pupils in western New York.

After years of teaching, she married the Rev. Perry O. Hill, of the Peninsula Conference of the Methodist Church. After moving to the Maryland Eastern Shore in the 1940s, she taught in Milton and Odessa. Born in Frewsburg, N.Y., Mrs.

Hill was a graduate of Fredonia Normal School, now the University of New York at Fredonia. In Fredonia, she played the pump-organ at twice-weekly services for Italian immigrants. He also did volunteer work with Mexicans in southern California in the 1930s. Her husband died in 1983. She is survived by two daughters, Delight Scouten of Baltimore and Gretchen Davis of Warrenton, a sister, Beulah B.

Landin of Nitro, W.Va.; and four grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Richardson Park United Methodist Church, Matthes and Maryland avenues. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in Taylor Cemetery, Taylor Center, N.Y.

Goens, a former concert pianist and Wilmington community activist, died Feb. 23 in Arnold Home, Detroit, where she was a patient- for several years.

She was 85. Mrs. Goens, formerly of Ridgeview Drive, Hockessin, had lived in Nashville, and Bluefield W.Va., before moving to Wilmington in 1939., She served on the first board of directors of Runnymede Wilmington, which she helped start in 1959 to build a racially balanced suburban community, where she eventually moved. Mrs. Goens was instrumental in the restoration of the Grand Opera House and served on its board of directors and its program committee.

She was an active volunteer and board member of Mental Health Association of Delaware. She was a graduate of Fisk University School of Music, Nashville, and earned a master's degree at Howard University, byterian Church of Chester, Pa. She is survived by her husband, Walter a daughter, Judith C. Ward of Fairfax, three brothers, Charles Lilley of Harleysville, Robert Lilley of California and George Painter of Norristown, four sisters, Barbara Sullivan of Chester County, Marie Baker of Norristown, Delores Lilley of Spring City, and Marjorie Kinney of Collegeville, and three grandchildren. Committal services will be at 10:30 a.m.

JOHN M. "WACKER" WALLS, 73, died Friday in Parkview Nursing Home, 2801 W. Sixth Wilmington, where he was a patient.

He suffered a stroke several years ago. Mr. Walls was an electrician at General Motors Boxwood Road assembly plant until retiring in 1979. He was a member of United Auto Workers Union Local 435, Newport. served in the Army during World War II.

His wife, Pat, died in February. Surviving are a daughter, Mary Patricia Stamm of St. Louis; a brother, Charles D. of Hershey, a sister, Helen W. Holden of Claymont; and grandson.

WALLS, 37, of 4018 Woodfox, Houston, Texas, died Thursday of cancer in Herman Hospital Medical Center, Houston, where he was a patient. Mr. Walls was a self-employed real estate broker in Houston for about five years.

He is survived by his father, William E. of Newark, a brother, Warren of Newark; four sisters, Lynne Arcara of Roslyn, N.Y., Janis Davis and Ann Frances Farmer, both of Seaford, and Christine Mitchell of Laurel, Del. Services will be at 11:45 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, North Du Pont Highway, Minquadale, where family and friends may call at 11. Washington, D.C. She taught piano at Fisk, operated a private piano studio in Nashville and was a member of a piano duo which gave concerts in the South. Mrs. Goens was active in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She was a board member of Walnut St.

YWCA and worked on its consolidation and move of women's activities to the King Street facility. She was a member of the ladies auxiliary of Delaware Medical Society and Delta Sigma Theta and Links sororities. Her husband, Dr. Walter a Wilmington general practitioner, died in 1974. She is survived by a brother, Arthur G.
