Sussex: $35 million budget OK'd River Inlet to pay far more than residents of Bethany Beach. An inlet-area owner of a home with a 65-foot frontage will pay the owner of a similar property in Bethany will pay $235. Sewer lines in Bethany were financed in the 1970s largely by federal and state grants, which weren't available a decade later when the Bethany sewer district was expanded to include developments near the inlet. Green noted county efforts to hold down sewer costs in the Lewes-Rehoboth Beach area, saying similar concern wasn't demonstrated near Bethany. reason for the difference and I'll say it, though it hurts is that over 95 percent of the homes in north Bethany are owned by people who are not residents of Sussex said a Washington, D.C., suburb.

Stickels agreed the county should have tried harder to reduce homeowners' costs of the Bethany expansion. "Initiatives should have been made in 1986, but they weren't," said Stickels, who wasn't employed by the county then. Three of the five current council members weren't in office at that time.
