3 Pa. turnpike's anniversary costs exceed 5300,000, paper reports including about 70 state legislators and Lt. Gov. Mark Singel. Other expenses included $72,043 for a 26-minute video, "Pride of Pennsylvania: America's First Su perhighway." The video was the largest single expense.

The money for the anniversary celebration comes from the turnpike's $125 million annual operating budget, which has twice in the past four years increased tolls by 30 percent. Bell chairs the joint Legislative Budget and Finance Committee, which found 18 "deficiencies and problem areas" in a performance audit of the turnpike for 1986-87. He retired from the civil service at Dover Air Force Base after 15 years. He is survived by his wife, Bertha; two sons, William H. Ill of Berkeley, and Raymond D. of Dover; two daughters, Jessica Moffett Davis of Hartly and Ber-nice Merhtens of Rising Sun; two sisters, Elizabeth Donohue of Galena, and Mary Brown of Clayton; and seven grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m.

PYLE, 77, former co-owner of Cobbler Shop Antiques, died Aug. 18 of cancer in Chester County Hospital, West Chester, where she was a patient. Mrs. Pyle of Fairville, Pa, and her husband, Lewis operated the shop in Fairville for many years. A homemaker, Mrs.

Pyle had done secretarial work at Fair Acres, a county home in Delaware County, before her marriage in 1935. She was an accomplished cook and needleworker, said her daughter, Patricia A. Pyle of Newark, Del. She had assisted with Chadds Ford Girl Scout troop and with the sewing booth at Chadds Ford May Fair during the 1950s. Born in Tan guy, she moved to Fairville in 1938.

She was a 1932 graduate of West Chester High Her husband of 54 years died in 1989. She is survived by her daughter; three brothers, Daniel W. Green of Nottingham, Norman D. Green of Burlington, N.J., and Thomas J. Green of Chadds Ford; and a granddaughter.

A brother, Grover C. Green of West Chester, died in June. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in McCrery Memorial Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Talleyville, where friends may call at 10. Burial will be in Elam United Methodist Church Cemetery, Elam.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to charity. MARIE J. REAMER, 78, of 203 S. Maryland Richardson Park, died Friday in St. Francis Hospital after surgery.

Mrs. Reamer had worked at the LOTTIE ELIZABETH BRATCHER, OWS Md, died Friday ot heart failure in Kent Queen Anne Hospital, Chestertown, where she was a patient. Mrs. Bratcher did domestic work for many years. She last worked for Mrs.

William Maule of Millington. She retired in 1975. -She was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church and its choir. She is survived by her husband, Daniel; two sons, Harold of Pond-town and Vaughn of Baltimore; four brothers, John Tate of Morg-nec, Oscar and Wilson Tate, both of Chesterville', and Garnett Tate of Washington, D.C.; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m.

Wednesday in Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, Pond-town, where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. JOHN F. CAMPBELL, 85, of Colonial Manor, N.J., formerly of Clay-mont, died Friday in Underwood Memorial Hospital, Woodbury, where he was a patient.

Mr. Campbell, who retired in 1971, was a maintenance foreman at Delaware River Terminal, Clay-mont, where he worked for 44 years. He was a member and patron four times of St. John's Chapter 4, Order of the Eastern Star near Stanton, member of Corinthian Lodge 20 Wilmington; Florence Lodge 87 Woodbury; Delaware Consistory, Wilmington; and Nur Temple. He was a 40-year member of Atonement United Methodist Church, Claymont, and a Sunday school teacher.

He was scoutmaster for more than 20 years at Boy Scout Troop 51, Claymont. His wife, Elizabeth Batchelor Campbell, died in 1980. He is survived by a son, Andrew B. of Colonial Manor; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10:30 a.m.

CURRY, 88, formerly of Oak Lane Manor, died Saturday in Foulk Manor North, 1212 Foulk Road, Brandywine Hundred, her residence for two years. Mrs. Curry had been a home-maker. She was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist-Wilmington. She had been a second reader and a Sunday school superintendent and teacher there and at a congregation in Weston, Mass.

She moved to Delaware in 1966 from Weston. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Charles two daughters, Marilyn McAllister of Lake Geneva, and Pamela Wright of Wilmington; seven grandsons and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Foulk Manor North. Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Church of Christ Scientist-Wilmington.

CARL DAVIES, 66, of Camp Arrowhead Road, Angola Neck, died Friday of heart failure in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, where he was a patient. He was a member of Horse Island Club, Angola Neck and 25-year member of Lewes Lions Club. He was a medic in the Navy and Marine Corps during World War II. He was wounded in the battle of Iwo Jima and received the Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife, Claire three sisters, Maudie Miller of California, Betty Wal-izer of Colorado Springs, and Tillie Miller of Macon, and a brother, Eddie of Honolulu.

Associated Press PITTSBURGH The state has spent more than $300,000 in a yearlong observance of the 50th anniversary of the Pennsylvania Turnpike and the bills continue to mount, a newspaper reported. Among the expenses reviewed by The Pittsburgh Press were $15,000 for a private party for politicians and officials of companies that do business on the toll road and $60,000 for souvenirs, gifts and mementos. "I'm surprised that they're spending so much," said state Sen. Clarence D. Bell, a Delaware County Republican.

Bell declined an invitation to the private party last October that was attended by 200 guests, MAN BEATEN: WILMINGTON An unidentified man was critically hurt Saturday when he was beaten during an argument in the 2200 block N. Market police said. City police Lt. Peter Episcopo said the victim apparently argued in the street with two other men about 1 a.m. He was assaulted with a blunt instrument and suffered severe head injuries, Episcopo said.

He was found lying in the street and taken to Christiana Hospital, where he was in critical condition Saturday night, authorities said. Anyone with information about the attack or the man's identity is asked to call detectives at 571-4460. No description of the victim was available Saturday night. MOTORCYCLE, CAR COLLIDE: CENTREVILLE A Pennsylvania man lost control of his motorcycle Saturday afternoon, crashed into an oncoming car and was thrown 59 feet, police said. Joseph Russo, 18, of Boothwyn, was flown to Christiana Hospital with a broken leg, cuts and scrapes after the 12:52 p.m.

accident in the 5700 block Pyles Ford Road, county police said. He was in serious condition late Saturday, police said. Investigators said Russo was riding west on Pyles Ford Road at high speed when he crested a hill, braked on a curve and skidded across the road into the front of a car. Police said Russo was wearing a helmet. MOTORCYCLIST INJURED: NEWARK A Newark man was seriously hurt Friday night when he was thrown from his motorcycle on East Main Street, authorities said.

Elwood Gilger, 20, of Findail Drive in Grantchester, was riding west near Haines Street about 9:30 p.m. when he tried to spin his motorcycle and lost control, city police said. Police said the bike hit several parked cars, and Gilger was thrown to the pavement. He was wearing a helmet, police said. Gilger was taken by helicopter to Christiana Hospital, where he was in serious condition Saturday night.

Police said they found that the children, ages 9 and 12, were sometimes locked in a bedroom or laundry room for several hours at a time and were occasionally left in the laundry room overnight. Snow and Harris were charged with several counts of endangering the children's welfare and with third-degree assault and were released on unsecured bail. The state Division of Child Protective Services is also investigat- MAN CRITICAL TYBOUTS CORNER A Virginia man re-' mained hospitalized in critical condition Saturday night after a Friday accident in which his van left the road and flipped several times, authorities said. The accident occurred at 8:52 a.m. on U.S.

13 near Governor Lea Road, said state police spokesman Cpl. David L. Baylor. The van, driven by Andre R. Mu-die, 20, of Hampton, was traveling north on U.S.

13 when it ran onto the median and overturned, Baylor said. Both occupants, who were not using seat belts, were thrown from the vehicle, Baylor said. Mudie and his passenger, Paul A. Clark, 22, of Virginia Beach, were taken to Christiana Hospital. Clark was not admitted.

HEROIN, COKE SEIZED: ELK TON, Md. Two Virginia men were in custody Saturday, charged with drug smuggling after police allegedly found almost a pound of heroin and cocaine in their car. State police said they stopped the car for a traffic violation as it traveled south on Interstate 95 near the Delaware line Friday afternoon. A search of the Mazda turned up 258 grams (just over 9 ounces) of cocaine and 179 grams (about 6.5 ounces) of heroin, police said. Troopers said they also confiscated a handgun, a small amount of marijuana and $691 cash.

James M. Allen, 41, and Allen Burke 27, both of Richmond, were charged with smuggling heroin and cocaine, possessing both drugs with the intent to distribute, transporting a handgun and possessing heroin, cocaine and marijuana. CECILIA GURTLER, 81, of Lin-stone Lane, Milford, died Friday of complications from a stroke in St. Francis Hospital, Wilmington. She had been a patient at Milford Memorial Hospital and was transferred to St.

Francis Hospital on Aug. 18. Formerly of New York City, Mrs. Gurtler was a retired telephone supervisor with an answering service there. She lived in Whiteleysburg in the early 1950s before moving to New York and returned to Delaware in 1982.

She was active in Milford Senior Center. Her husband, Robert C. died in 1972. She is survived by a son, Robert C. with whom she lived; two daughters, Anita Frua of Mount Dora, and Gracyne Zendler of Felton; two sisters, Nancy Sullivan of Staten Island, N.Y., and Minnie Olsen of Dover; six grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.

JOSEPHINE ANN "PHINE" JACKSON, 74, of 211 Capitol Trail, Newark, died Friday of cancer at home. Mrs.

Jackson worked in the admissions office at Delaware Park Race Track for more than 21 years. Earlier, she worked at Continental Diamond Fibre Budd Co. and food store, all in Newark. She was a member of St. John-Holy Angels Catholic Church, Newark.

She wintered at Crystal Lake Trailer Park, Fort Lauderdale, for the past 24 years. Her husband, Roland was killed in the battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. Surviving are two sons, Monty, with whom she lived, and Kenneth "Dutchie" Rash of New Jersey; and three sisters, Rose Sacconey and Victoria Lusardi, both of Newark, and Mary Rossi of Wilmington. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 82 Possum Park Road.
