One painting, "Family at Play," sold at auction in New York on Nov. 21. 1989, for $605,000. Mr.

Tamayo had painted little since he underwent heart surgery in November 1989. His paintings are the final works displayed in a huge retrospective of Mexican art titled "Mexico 30 Centuries of Splendor," which went on display at the Metropolitan last fall and is now being shown in San Antonio. Survivors include his wife, Olga. ate of Goldey-Beacom College. His wife, Virginia died in 1990.

He is survived by a daughter, Capt. Patricia E. Alvoet with -the Air Force in Germany; three sons, Richard Keith E. and David all of Wilmington; and four grandchildren. Services and burial will be private.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to American Heart Association, Wilmington. BETTE B. WINKLES, 62, of Hockessin, died Saturday of cancer in Christiana Hospital, where she was a patient. Mrs. Winkles, a homemaker, was a member of St.

John the Beloved Catholic Church. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Paul two sons, Jeffrey A. of Germantown, and P. Scott of Sewell, N.J.; a daughter, Melinda W. Sheatsley of Hockessin; a brother, John M.

Hedwig's Catholic Church, Wilmington. EDWARD F. MCGRAW, 67, of 2800 Millcreek Road, Mill Creek, died Saturday of a heart attack at home. Mr. McGraw retired in 1982 after 31 years at Du Pont Centre Road site.

He started as a design engineer at the Seaford nylon plant and was transferred to textile fibers in Wilmington in 1954. Since retiring, he was a guide at Hagley Museum near Greenville. He was an avid gardener, tennis player and square dancer. He was a member of Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church; Du Pont Country Club; Wilmington Trail Club; X-10's Square Dance Club; and Model A's Tennis Club. He was a baritone and sang with several church choirs in Seaford and Wilmington and a local jazz group, the Interpreters.

He graduated in 1951 with a degree in electrical engineering from Syracuse (N.Y.) University. He was an Army anti-aircraft gunner during World War II, serving in England, France and Germany. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mildred two sons, James E. of Malvern, and Steven A. of Wilmington; a daughter, Ellen McGraw-Blanco of Mount Tabor, N.J.; and a grandson who was born May 21, Mr.

McGraw's birthday. suggests contributions to Multiple Sclerosis Society. JAMES R. SALMONS Sit, 56, of 5 White Oak Drive, Perryville, Md, died Monday of cancer at home. Mr.

Salmons was a heavy-equipment operator for eight years at Alan McCann Contracting, North East. Earlier, he worked at James Julian Construction Wilmington, and Edward P. Howell Elkton. H6 was an avid fisherman and hunter. He is survived by his wife, Janet a son, James R.

Jr. of Baltimore; three daughters, Cheryl O'Brien of New London, Robin Lynn Hall of Elkton and Loni Sue Salmons of Perryville; his parents, Willie R. and Wave Salmons of Mountain City, and six grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Hicks Home for Funerals, Bow and Stockton streets, Elkton, where friends may call at noon.

Burial will be in St. John's Methodist Cemetery, Charles-town. ROBERT G. STEELE, 56, of 1220 Janice Drive, Yorkshire, Newark, died Monday of heart failure in Christiana Hospital. Mr.

Steele, an electrical engineer at the Du Pont Co. for 28 years, retired in 1988. He received a bachelor's degree in 1957 from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He was a member of Du Pont Country Club, where he was an avid golfer. He had volunteered at the LPGA McDonald's Classic for several years.

He coached girls softball in the 1970s. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Paty Steele; a son, B. Christopher of Bohemia, Long Island, N.Y.; three daughters, Susan Landau, Amy Steele and Barbara Steele, all of Newark; his mother, Gladys G. Steele of Nashville, two sisters, Betsy Gray of Mount Juliet, and Beverly Anderson of Nashville; and four grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m.

JOSEPH R. WELDIN, 69, of Centre Road, Elsmere, died Saturday of complications from cancer in Christiana Hospital, after becoming ill at home. Mr. Weldin, a security guard at Wilmington Hospital of Medical Center of Delaware and General Motors retired about 1984. Earlier, he had worked at New Castle County Correctional Institution, Prices Corner, and as a civil service employee at an Army Air Force base near New Castle in the 1940s.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of Bethany Baptist Church and a gradu He is survived by his mother, M. Gertrude DeStafney at home; two brothers, Joseph of Hockessin and James of Boxwood Road; and two sisters, Janice Iaconi of New London, and Sandra Carpenter of Hockessin. DILL, 79, of 4137 New Castle New Castle, died Sunday of congestive heart failure in St. Francis Hospital. Mrs. Dill, a homemaker, was a charter member of United Pentecostal Church, Minquadale, and taught Sunday school for nearly 30 years. She was a member of New Castle Senior Citizens.

Her husband, Edward, died in 1969. She is survived by two sons, George L. and Robert and three daughters, Betty L. Jackson, Thelma M. Waltman and Shirley A.

Jones, all of New Castle; a brother, Bobby Taylor of Wilmington; two sisters, Mabel Cathell of New Castle and Sarah Ewell of Woodbine, eight grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. Main Newark, where services will be at 8. JOHN D. DONAHOE, 77, of Wilmington, died Monday of cancer at home. Mr. Donahoe, a chemical technician at Du Pont Experimental Station, retired in 1976 after 30 years.

He was a member of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church and Du Pont Country Club. He was an avid golfer. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Anne Malloy Donahoe; a son, the Rev.

Falkowski, an electrician for more than 40 years, had worked for Penn Central and Am-trak railroads. He retired in 1981. He was a member of St. Hed-wig's Catholic Church, Polish Falcons Nest 20 and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific theater.

Associated Press MEXICO CITY Rufino Ta-mayo, the last of an extraordinary group of painters who defined modern Mexican art for the world, died Monday of pneumonia. He was 91. Mr. Tamayo was a prolific painter whose works spanned more than seven decades. His early paintings bear some of the trademarks shared by mural ists Diego Rivera, Jose Orozco and David Siqueiros.

Although Mr. Tamayo's work was decidedly less political than Rivera and Siqueiros, he is grouped with them as a creative force that defined 20th century Mexican painting for the world. LOUIS JOSEPH BLITHE, 71, of Sicklerville, N.J., formerly of Claymont, died Thursday of heart failure in Wilmington Hospital after becoming ill while visiting a friend. Mr. Blithe, a welder for 20 years at Westinghouse Lester, retired in 1984.

He attended Audubon (N.J.) High School in the late 1930s. He was an Army veteran, and he enjoyed golf. His wife, Wayne, died in 1979. He is survived by three sons, Jeff of Penns Grove, Kim Richard of Glassboro and Craig of Claymont; five daughters, Debbie Rappo of Deptford, Denise Rappo of Collins Lake, Karin Morengo of New Castle, Cathleen Blithe of Claymont and Jill Villari of Chicago; his mother, Molly Blithe of Sicklerville; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey's Funeral Home, 11 E.

DONOVAN SERVICES: Services for Dorothy May Holden Donovan, 70, of Kent 384, Harrington, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Berry Funeral Home, Northwest Front Street, Milford, where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Mrs. Donovan was found dead at home Sunday, state police said. Police called the death a homicide. The cause has not been released by the medical examiner. Mrs.

Donovan, a homemaker, was a member of Harrington Senior Center and Church of God in Milford. She enjoyed gardening and looking after animals. Her first husband, Wallace Holden, died in 1958. Her second husband, Ralph Donovan, died in 1987. She is survived by a son, Charles Holden of Harrington; two daughters, Brenda Alexander of Camden and Diana Rhinehardt of Marydel; two sisters, Mary Tin-ley and Edna Dearth, both of Milford; and seven grandchildren.

Mrs. Ciach studied art with the late Wilmington artist Walter Stewart, co-illustrator of Mark Twain's "Life on the Mississippi," and Wilmington-born Reynolds Thomas, who was commissioned to paint portraits of the late Princess Grace of Monaco and the late Pope Paul VI. Her oils, water colors, acrylics, pen-and-ink drawings and pastels are in collections in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Formerly of the Centreville (Md.) area, Mrs. Ciach had been a secretary to the clerk of the court house there for 10 years. She moved to Delaware in 1961 and was a member of Richardson Park United Methodist Church and Community Action Program. She was past president of Women's Civic Association of Richardson Park. Her first husband, H.

Medford Porter, died in 1959. Her second husband, John S. Ciach, died in 1986. She is survived by two stepdaughters, Genevieve Boleslawski and Frances Quigley, both of Wilmington; a brother, Howard Jester of Sudlersville, three sisters, Pearl Cassidy of Upper Darby, Hazel Perkins of Eas-ton, and Mary Jarvis of Chestertown, six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. June 23, McCrery Funeral Home. BB GUN OWNER CHARGED: NEW CASTLE Swanwyck Gardens man was arrested Saturday after giving two 10-year-olds permission to shoot a BB gun in a field, county police said. Officers were called to a field between Edge Avenue and Interstate 295 Saturday afternoon and found the youngsters shooting the gun, said Patrolman Vincent G. Kowal, county police spokesman. Police said they took the children to the home of Thomas Herring, 36, in the 100 block Edge where Herring admitted allowing the youngsters to shoot the gun.

He also became disorderly while talking to the officers, Kowal said. Herring was charged with menacing and illegally dealing with a dangerous weapon. Ann Stewart and Eric Ruth ning.
