The men were admitted to Christiana Hospital with unspecified injuries, police said. Menghi was treated for possible back and neck injuries and a cut to her left leg and was admitted to Christiana Hospital, where a hospital spokeswoman said she was in fair condition.

Her passenger, 24-year-old Michelle Foster of Dover, also was in fair condition at Christiana Hospital, where she was treated for possible back injuries. Mr. Smith was an electrician for Allied Chemical Co. in Marcus Hook, retiring in 1977 after 36 years. He was a member of Community Fellowship Church, Prices Corner.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret a daughter, Bonnie L. Miller of Windermere, near Stanton; two brothers, Robert of Old Forge, and Nathaniel of Middletown; a sister, Emma John of Wilmington; and two grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek, where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

SUSIE EMMA SPICER, 66, of near Seaford, died Sunday of cancer at home. Mrs. Spicer, a homemaker, had been a waitress at Moores' Carry-out Restaurant, Seaford, for four years, retiring in 1978 on disability.

She was a member of Christ Evangelistic Church, Laurel. She is survived by her husband, Norman Edward; two sons, Norman E. of Georgetown and Donald Lee of Laurel; a daughter, Patricia K. Littleton, with whom the Spicers lived; two brothers, James Donald Jefferson of Felton and Ronald L. Jefferson of Seaford; a sister, Virginia J.

By ERIC RUTH Staff reporter NEW CASTLE Both occupants of an apparently speeding car were seriously injured after a tumbling collision Sunday morning along U.S. 13, state police reported. Frederick Necessary of Street, was in critical condition and Michael Miller of Darlington, was in serious at Christiana Hospital near Stanton after the 10:20 a.m. accident along Delaware's main north-south highway. The men's ages were unavailable.

Two people in the second vehicle were slightly injured, authorities said. Necessary was driving north on the highway in a Ford Mustang at a high rate of speed, according to state police spokesman Cpl. Rick Chamberlin. The driver of the second car, Kathleen Menghi, 45, of New Castle, was turning right into the northbound lanes from Schafer Boulevard in Du Pont Parkway Apartments, formerly known as Beaver Brook. Two women who were attacked Sunday by a machete-weilding intruder grabbed the weapon from their assailant, who fled and was caught in the next county, authorities said. Cecil County Sheriffs Department spokesman George Haggerty described the assault as a "domestic incident," noting the assailant, Leroy J. Rush, had been living with one of the women until recently. Rush, 36, of Port Deposit, stabbed his former girlfriend, 43-year-old Jean Hollingsworth in the head, arm and hand, Haggerty said.

Rush also stabbed Hollings-worth's sister, Hilda M. Garnett, 55, in the hand, he added. The assault occurred at 7:25 a.m. at Garnett's residence at 7417 Augustine Hermann Highway, also known as Maryland 213, Haggerty said. Before breaking in JULIA A.

EUGENE FRETZ, 68, of Tampa, formerly of Odessa, died Saturday of cancer at his daughter's home in Middletown. From 1963 to 1971, Mr. Fretz was a supervisor for Crumpton Construction Wilmington. After that, he was a self-employed contractor in the Middletown-Odessa area until 1981, when he retired and moved to Tampa.

He was a Marine veteran of World War II and a member of Tampa American Legion. His hobbies included woodworking, painting and dancing. He is survived by a son, Larry Eugene of Middletown; a daughter, Kathleen M. Chas, with whom he had been staying; two brothers, Charles of Newark and Stanley Bud of New Castle; two sisters, Gertrude Chase of Clayton and Doris Arment of Fresno, Texas; a companion, Helen Engle of Tampa; and five grandchildren. ELWOOD F. MONTGOMERY, 74, of Milford, died Saturday of cancer in Milford Memorial Hospital, after becoming ill at home. Mr. Montgomery retired in 1975 after many years as a civilian aircraft mechanic at Dover Air Force Base. For two years, he was president of the Dover Air Force Base Government Employees Union.

He served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Blue Hen Post 6483 and Elks Lodge 2401, both of Milford. He is survived by his wife, Martha Nell P. Montgomery; a son, RodgerB. of Milford; two daughters, Martha M.

Fleetwood of Georgetown and Cindy L. Montgomery of Milford; three brothers, John A. of Oxon Hill, Warren C. of Glen Wilton, Va. and Jack E.

of Waldorf, two sisters, Louise V. Lacey of Milford and Marjorie W. Love of Alexandria, and six grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Milford, where friends may call one hour earlier.

Police in Kent County stopped Rush's car in Kennedyville and took him into custody without incident, Haggerty said. Both victims were treated at Union Hospital in Elkton. Hollingsworth, who lives on Old Schoolhouse Drive in Port Deposit, required 25 stitches, Haggerty said. Police have charged Rush with one count of assault with intent to commit murder for his attack on Hollingsworth, two counts of assault and two counts of battery, Haggerty said. Rush was being held in the Cecil County Detention Center Sunday night and had not yet seen a court commissioner for a bond review.

By KATHLEEN HAICH Special to The News Journal STANTON Eighteen-year-old Ryan Dean Alpine died of leukemia Saturday at Christiana Hospital near Stanton. Mr. Alpine, who lived in Greenville, learned of his disease last fall, family members said Sunday. But he continued his studies at Wilmington Friends School, where he lettered in football and lacrosse. Last fall, he was selected as an All-Conference linebacker.

Despite his illness, Mr. Alpine graduated with his class in June, arriving from Christiana Hospital just as the seniors had finished entering. Mr. Alpine sat at the the back of the class with a favorite teacher, Lyn Hidy and many classmates were unaware he was there. When his name was called, Mr.

Alpine walked to the podium and received his diploma. Robert C. Tattersall, Mr. Alpine's coach of Wilmington Friends' football team, on Sunday praised both his ability and spirit playing football. "He was an excellent linebacker after being hit really hard, he would come back to the huddle laughing," Tattersall said.

"His attitude was always positive. He was a hard worker. Although injured, he wouldn't quit or back down. He wanted to keep playing." He also was a star in one of the team's lighter activities a mudslide contest to see how far the linemen could slide on the field, Tattersall said. His football teammates dedicated last season's closing game to Mr.

BROWN, 83, of 1618 W. Fourth Wilmington, formerly of 500 Walnut Windsor Apartments, Wilmington, died Wednesday of cancer at home. Mr. Brown worked for the state Highway Department in Dover for many years, retiring in the 1950s. He attended Mount Zion AME Church, Dover.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing and gardening. As a child, he attended Booker T. Washington Elementary School, Dover. His wife, Virginia, died in 1989. Surviving are three daughters, Betty V.

Richardson and Margaret Henry-Hamilton, both of Detroit, and Nancy J. Butcher, with whom he lived; a sister, Eva Holden of Dover; 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
