Some of it is at Ramford, his birthplace, where paper mill pollution has turned a once, beautiful river into what amounts to an open sewer. The odor at Rumford Is nau. seating, and we were glad to get away from the foam.covered stream.

Muskle 1 mother lives a mile out of Rumford and we hope her home is beyond the pollution area. We've come through a section of Maine along the Androscog. gin river, a few miles from Augusta, the capital, and through a manufacturing center Including Auburn, a shoe town, and Lewis ton, textile town. We had a look at Portland, Malne'slarg. est city, and a leader in Hie state's widespread fishicg industry.

Maine boasts many Industries, and number one is the growing and marketing of potatoes. WE DISAGREE A Chamber of Commerce introduction to the state, reads: are the highest tides In Passamaquoddy Bay), litej'tajjtlest potatoes and the est conversation in Ihe country. Flat Yankee twang and Ihe patois of French Canadians make Maine's talk as salty as the sea." As to the potatoes, we must disagree. French fries were good but the bakers we were served at several places do not hold a candle to Idaho's flaky bakers. The Maine baker is damp, and Ihe mashed potatoes, we think, were powdered and mixed with water Instead of milk.

Because Maine is on the At. lantie, It excels in fresh sea. food. We got to see a lobster dock, a large number of boats, and assorted lobster traps. The site was Cape Porpoise In the Kennebunk area.

There was no time to order a wedding cake but the couple married. The groom, George Bourne, was ship's carpenter and wood carver. Bays and other indentations are almost everywhere. Inland Maine Is said to have more than 2,000 lakes, thanks to glaciation which scratched out many low places and, incidental. ly, carried off much of Maine's top soil. The soil layer over the state Is said to average six inches but with ample rain, potatoes represent 40 per cent of the agriculture income.

Old country names reflect the early settlement of New England states, among the towns being Belfast, Mexico, Norway, Poland, South China and South Paris in Maine.
