ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL The Albuquerque Tribune U.S. Atomic Agency Ex-Official, 80, Dies Journal Staff Report Lawrence Preston Gise, who headed the former Atomic Energy Commission's Albuquerque Operations Office in the 1960s, died Sunday at a San Antonio, Texas, hospital. He was 80. Born April 23, 1915, in Laredo, Texas, Gise retired from the AEC post in Albuquerque in 1968 after 33 years of government service. He was raised in Big Wells, Texas, and was the salutatorian of the local high school graduating class of 1932.

Three years later, he married Mattie Louise Strait, who had been his class valedictorian. In the midst of the Great Depression they moved to Washington, D.C., where he began his government service as a messenger with the Department of Agriculture. While working his way up to management positions in several federal agencies, he attended night school in Washington, D.C., earning a bachelor's degree in commercial science from Columbus University in 1938 and a master's in the same field from Strayer College in 1940. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946, and was a lieutenant commander aboard the destroyer USS Neunzer during World War Il.

After the war, he worked briefly for the Veterans Administration, then worked as deputy chief of the estimates and analysis division of the U.S. Navy Department's budget DAILY RECORD office. In 1 1949, he went to the AEC's finance division, then transferred to AEC's division of military applications, becoming assistant director in 1955. From 1958 to 1961, he was with the Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency, working on space technology and ballistic missile defense. He came to AEC's Albuquerque Operations Office as deputy manager in 1961, and in 1964 was appointed by Congress to head AEC's seven-state, operations, including Sandia, Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories.

Among awards Gise received were the AEC's outstanding service award in 1956, a federal 30-year service award in 1965, and the U.S. Navy's distinguished service award in 1967 for the Albuquerque Operations Office's contributions to the Polaris missile program. After retiring in 1968, the Gises moved to Mrs. Gise's family ranch in South Texas. Mrs.

Gise died in 1977. Last year, he married Nona Louise Martin Pickett of Cotulla, Texas, who survives. He was recently preceded in death by his son, Lawrence P. Gise and is survived by his daughter, Jackie Bezos of New Jersey; stepchildren Maureen Bell and C.W. Pickett, and five grandchildren.
